We learned so much about strategy and communication, especially when it came to splitting the stations. Our goal was always a roughly 50/50 split, but we quickly realized it’s more about playing to individual strengths rather than just strict equality. For cardio machines like the Ski Erg and Rower, we aimed for even distances. My boyfriend and I both did 250 meters on the Ski Erg and 500 meters on the Rower each time we hit these stations. This helped us maintain a consistent pace and conserve energy without burning out too quickly. We found it crucial to communicate during these stations – a quick nod or 'you're almost there!' made a huge difference in keeping motivation high. The Sled Pull was where our strategy really shone. We knew it was a strength-dependent station, so we planned to alternate lengths. I took the first length, he took the second, and so on. There was a moment where I did 1/2 length and he did 1.5 lengths to push through a tough spot, showing how flexible and adaptive you need to be in real-time! For the Burpee Broad Jumps, I took on one full length, focusing on efficiency and consistent jumps to keep our momentum going. Farmers Carries and Sandbag Lunges are stations where grip strength and leg endurance are key. We split the Farmers Carries evenly, 100 meters each, to save our grip for later stages of the race. For the Sandbag Lunges, I took two lengths, then he took one, and I finished with another length. We found that breaking it down like this prevented either of us from redlining too early. It's all about managing fatigue and leveraging each other's strengths! The Wall Balls were intense! Our strategy was to switch every 10 reps. This kept our shoulders from burning out too quickly and allowed for short recovery bursts. It's amazing how quickly those reps add up when you're communicating effectively with your partner. Beyond the splits, preparing for Hyrox mixed doubles also involves proper nutrition and recovery. We made sure to fuel up properly before the race and even kept some MYPROTEIN energy gels handy for a quick boost if needed. Hydration, of course, is non-negotiable! And of course, we discussed matching Hyrox outfits! While we didn't go full matching, we did coordinate our colors, which added to the fun and team spirit. Many couples at Hyrox Anaheim had really cool matching gear, which is a great way to show your partnership and make the experience even more memorable. It's not just about performance; it's about enjoying the entire experience together. My biggest takeaway? Communication is king in mixed doubles. Talk to your partner before, during, and after each station. Adjust your plan as needed, celebrate small wins, and most importantly, have fun pushing your limits together! This race was a test of both physical and mental strength, and doing it with my partner made it even more special.
