what I’ve done lately to get a DOPAMINE HIT💊
With winter right around the corner and the days getting shorter I struggle to keep myself entertained and engaged in my life.
It can be easy to turn to non-sustainable shortcuts to get those hits of dopamine (like binging junk food or impulsive shopping).
Here’s what I’ve done recently to encourage healthier habits in my own life, while ensuring that I feel good doing them ⬇️⬇️⬇️
💡SPENT TIME OUTSIDE🌷
• Whether it’s going for a walk or petting highland cows, I made it a priority to get my body moving outside and into the sun
💡EXPLORED A NEW CAFE☕️
• Eating out in moderation is never a bad thing; sometimes a girl just needs a sweet treat! Trying out a new coffee shop was the perfect way for me to get out of the house, while remaining productive and getting my work done
💡INVESTED INTO MY RELATIONSHIPS❤ ️
• Reaching out to others when feeling below baseline can be an extremely difficult experience. But putting in as much effort as I can into those relationships— even just communicating my needs— is incredibly rewarding!
💡MADE HANDWRITTEN CARDS💌
• Writing and decorating cards to send to my loved ones has been such a beautiful outlet to connect with others, inspire creativity, and foster gratitude. It’s a great pastime and leaves me with a good feeling inside
💡TRIED A NEW EXPERIENCE 🎉
• Trying a new experience is a task that challenges my comfort zone and encourages me to broaden my interest and skills. I Made a “zine” or a small booklet about a topic I’m passionate about, which motivated me to tap into my creative side and explore other curiosities
💡PRACTICED MINDFULNESS 🧘♀️
•This activity is the most broad, and arguably the most difficult to accomplish. For me, I’ve found myself struggling with making judgments often; so I put more effort into observing everything around me using only my senses and factual statements to describe them. By observing without judgement, I succeeded in practicing mindfulness— a skill valuable to implement in my own habits
These are just a few examples of things I’ve done to give me a dopamine boost, and I hope that they’re as useful to others as they are to me!

As winter approaches and daylight hours dwindle, staying engaged and uplifted can be a real challenge. It's common to seek out quick dopamine hits through less healthy means like overeating junk food or impulsive shopping, but these often leave us feeling worse in the long run. Instead, embracing wholesome activities can provide that necessary burst of happiness while promoting overall well-being. One effective way to elevate dopamine naturally is by spending quality time outdoors. Exposure to sunlight helps regulate circadian rhythms and boosts serotonin levels, a precursor to dopamine. Whether it's a walk in the park or something unique like interacting with animals such as highland cows, these moments help reconnect us with nature and increase physical activity—both of which contribute to improved mood. Trying new experiences, like visiting a new cafe, not only breaks the monotony but also stimulates curiosity and creativity. Savoring a small sweet treat in moderation can be enjoyable without guilt, especially when combined with productivity such as working or journaling while there. This balance makes outings fulfilling rather than stressful. Investing time into nurturing relationships is another powerful dopamine booster. Reaching out to friends or loved ones even when feeling low can be daunting, but open communication strengthens bonds and provides emotional support. Handwritten cards add a personal touch to these connections; they serve as a creative outlet that fosters gratitude and mindfulness. Mindfulness practice, though challenging, helps cultivate nonjudgmental awareness and decreases stress. Observing surroundings using all senses and focusing on factual descriptions instead of judgments trains the mind toward calm and clarity, which improve emotional resilience. Engaging in creative projects like making “zines” also expands interests and taps into self-expression. Such activities encourage stepping outside comfort zones and can uncover new passions. Incorporating these strategies into daily life not only provides sustainable dopamine boosts but also builds healthier habits to counteract winter blues. Remember, consistency matters more than intensity; small, enjoyable actions done regularly add up to meaningful improvements in mood and mental health.
