Gus the Ghost
When I purchased this from Pottery Bar, Gus wasn’t holding a pumpkin. Two weeks later they come out with Gus holding a pumpkin. So I made my Gus holding a pumpkin. #PB #ghost #ghostdecor #halloween
So many of you asked about my Gus the Ghost pumpkin hack, so I'm spilling all the tea! When I decided my Pottery Barn Gus needed a little something extra, I knew a mini craft pumpkin was the way to go. I just used a bit of hot glue (carefully!) to secure it right in his arms. You could also use a stronger adhesive like E6000 for a more permanent hold, especially if your Gus lives outdoors. Make sure the pumpkin is lightweight! I've seen some people even use small faux gourds or lanterns, which would also look adorable and give Gus a different seasonal look. But beyond my little Gus, there are so many fun ghost themes you can bring to life for Halloween! If you're looking for 'best ghost themes,' let me share some of my favorites: Classic Spooky Ghosts: Think cheesecloth draped over balloons or wire frames, glowing eyes, and eerie sounds. These are super easy to make and can be placed anywhere, from trees to doorways, creating an instant haunted vibe. Friendly Phantoms: For a cuter vibe, use white felt ghosts with rosy cheeks and sweet smiles. These are perfect for families with young kids and can be strung as garlands, used as plush decor, or placed as tabletop accents. Vintage Victorian Spirits: Imagine lace, aged fabrics, and slightly melancholic expressions. These ghosts often look like they've stepped out of an old portrait. You can find antique-looking props or DIY them with tea-stained fabrics for an authentic, eerie elegance. Ghostly Gourds: Don't just carve pumpkins! Paint white pumpkins with ghost faces, or use mini gourds as ghost bodies with tiny fabric capes. They're a charming and unique twist on traditional pumpkin decor. Haunted House Ambiance: Remember, it's not just about the ghosts themselves, but the atmosphere around them! As long as there's a light from a warm string of fairy lights or flickering LED candles, you can create a truly magical-yet-spooky scene. Think about draping sheer white fabric, adding cobwebs, and subtle lighting to make your ghosts really pop. Even a simple spotlight on your Gus can make a huge difference! Speaking of 'tailoring' your decor, it's all about making it uniquely *yours*. For my Gus, it was a pumpkin, but maybe your ghost needs a tiny hat, a scarf, or even a little sign! Don't feel limited by what you see in stores. Thrift stores and dollar stores are treasure troves for little accessories you can repurpose. Ribbons, small faux flowers, or even mini brooms can instantly transform a basic piece into something special. It's like giving your decor a personal stylist! Another fantastic ghost theme for those who love a bit of sparkle is Glitter Ghosts. These are super easy! Just get some white craft ghosts (foam or plastic work great), apply a thin layer of craft glue, and then douse them in iridescent or silver glitter. They look amazing catching the light, especially at night or near a window. You can even hang them from trees with invisible fishing line for a floating effect. For the maximalists, consider a Ghost Parade theme! Gather ghosts of all shapes and sizes – sheet ghosts, wooden cutouts, ceramic figures, and yes, even your customized Gus! Arrange them together as if they're marching or floating in unison. Add some faux fog and a spooky soundtrack, and you've got an instant Halloween spectacle. And for those who appreciate understated elegance, a Minimalist Ghost theme can be incredibly chic. Think simple white silhouettes against a dark wall, or a single, beautifully crafted ghost figure like Gus, perhaps illuminated gently. Sometimes less is more, letting the quality of the piece shine through. Remember, the goal is to create a cohesive look that brings joy and a little bit of spooky charm to your space. Whether you're 'tailoring' an existing piece or building a whole new ghost ensemble, let your creativity lead the way! Happy haunting!
