Fashion Industry Job Advise

Hi all!

Lately I’ve been doing some self introspection and realized that I don’t think I am happy in my current career field. I realized that I want to get into an industry working with something that I have a deep rooted passion for and have for a long time, and the two things that come to mind when thinking of this are animals and fashion. I’ve been thinking about moving out of HR/staffing and into the fashion industry, but I don’t know all the different options there are available in this industry, and/or what’s required education or experience wise to get into these roles.

I have a bachelors in business administration as well as a certificate in HR Management, so maybe something more on the business side of fashion would be good, but I definitely want to work with the clothing. I do think I could be a good stylist or buyer, probably not a designer though as my art/drawing/sewing capabilities are a little limited currently. I am open to going back to school for a second degree if need be and if it can be done in congruity with my current 8-5 job.

Sorry for my ramblings, I’m just really trying to figure out how I can find a job I like working with something I have always been passionate about. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated and I thank you all so much!

... Read moreThe fashion industry is vibrant and offers a variety of roles suited for individuals with different skills and backgrounds. Those considering a transition, such as moving from HR to fashion, have several options, including roles like fashion buyer, stylist, or merchandise planner. Fashion buyers focus on selecting and purchasing clothing for retail stores, requiring analytical skills and market knowledge. Stylists collaborate with clients or brands to create appealing looks, drawing on creativity and an eye for trends. Educationally, degrees in fashion merchandising or marketing are beneficial. Additionally, online certifications can enhance skills and knowledge without committing to multiple years of study. Networking is crucial. Engaging with professionals in the industry through events, online groups, and social media platforms like LinkedIn can open doors. Many industry veterans are willing to provide mentorship or guidance based on their experiences, which can be invaluable. For those who fear lacking design skills, it's essential to note that fashion careers extend beyond design; business acumen is equally critical. Consider pursuing internships or entry-level positions to gain experience that will make your transition smoother. Inspiration can be drawn from successful figures in the industry. To thrive, stay updated on fashion trends and maintain a portfolio to showcase your styling ideas or merchandise strategies. Remember, your passion for fashion can lead to a fulfilling career!
