Our backyard flock

Keeping a backyard flock can be a wonderfully rewarding experience, offering fresh eggs and a closer connection to nature. From my own experience, the key to a thriving flock begins with creating a safe and comfortable environment for the chickens. Make sure their coop is predator-proof, well-ventilated, and spacious enough so they don’t feel cramped. Nutrition plays a big role, too. Providing a balanced diet with quality poultry feed supplemented by kitchen scraps and grains helps maintain their health and egg production. I found that fresh water is just as important, especially during warmer months, to keep the flock hydrated and active. Daily interaction with the birds is also beneficial. It helps you recognize early signs of illness and builds trust, which makes handling them easier. Occasionally allowing supervised free-range time can enrich their lives by offering opportunities for natural foraging and exercise. Another aspect often overlooked is regular coop maintenance. Cleaning the bedding and removing waste reduces the risk of disease and parasites. I try to make this a weekly routine, which keeps the environment fresh and comfortable for my flock. Lastly, patience and observation are crucial. Every flock has its unique dynamics, so being attentive to your chickens’ behavior helps you adapt your care practices.
