i’ve had @sushinoznyc on my list for like FOREVERRRR but the $550/person price tag always hindered me from waltzing in 🤑 but i just found out that their little sister @nozmarketnyc not only is way cheaper (think $80 omakase - which is less than 15% the price of a sushi noz tasting menu) but also uses the SAME FISH SHIPMENTS as sushi noz 🤯 such an insane price for this high quality fish 🐟!! we learned that a majority of the fish comes straight from japan too 🇯🇵

they also have a super cute standing hand roll bar in the front with $10 hand rolls during happy hour (mon-fri from 2-5pm). outside of HH, most handrolls range from $6-14 (the cheaper ones are mostly vegetarian like avocado, sweet corn, asparagus)!

we got the classic omakase menu for $80! (🫶🏼 = my faves):

-pickled veggies

-hokkaido scallop 🫶🏼

-seasonal sea bream

-horse mackerel

-spanish mackerel

-akami tuna 🫶🏼

-king salmon 🫶🏼

-chutoro

-ikura

-miso soup with fish broth 🫶🏼

-tamagoyaki 🫶🏼

everything else we ordered:

-spicy rock shrimp handroll

-kinki (channel rockfish) 🫶🏼

-toro taku handroll 🫶🏼

don’t come here if you’re looking for sushi with a lot of frills, toppings, combinations, etc - edomae style is much more traditional to the point where most nigiri courses are only the excellently prepped fish + seasoned rice together. definitely differentiates from all of the other budget omakase spots around the city that use a lot of flavor combinations + toppings (example: salmon with tomato, chutoro with foie gras, etc.) but both styles have their pros and cons! as long as the fish is fresh, i’ll eat it 😙

for me, i’m a big fan how the chefs here brought out the best flavors of each fish 😍 and the miso soup used fish broth which was 🤌🤌 SO GOOD, my bf said he’d buy cans of that if they let him 🤣 beautiful interior too!!

Noz Market
2024/8/7 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, so you've heard the buzz about Michelin-quality omakase in NYC, but the price tag at places like Sushi Noz can be daunting, right? I totally get it – that's exactly why I was so thrilled to uncover Noz Market, their "little sister" spot. It’s not just any affordable omakase; it's a genuine hack that gives you access to the same incredibly fresh, high-quality fish shipments as the two-Michelin-starred Sushi Noz, but for a fraction of the cost! Seriously, my mind was blown when I heard this. For just $80, you get an omakase experience that feels incredibly luxurious without the hefty bill. What truly sets Noz Market apart, from my experience, is their commitment to edomae style sushi. If you're new to this, it means the focus is entirely on the fish itself – its natural flavors, perfect texture, and the chef’s precise preparation. Unlike some of the other 'budget omakase' spots I've tried in NYC that might load up on sauces or unique toppings to enhance flavor, Noz Market lets the quality of the fish shine. Each piece of nigiri, from the delicate Hokkaido scallop to the rich chutoro, is expertly paired with perfectly seasoned rice. It’s a purist’s dream, and honestly, it taught me to appreciate sushi in a whole new way. You can truly taste the difference that fresh, high-grade ingredients make, and knowing it comes from the same source as Sushi Noz makes it even more special. Beyond the omakase, their hand rolls are another standout feature, especially during happy hour. From Monday to Friday, 2-5 PM, you can snag some delicious hand rolls for just $10 each at their standing bar. It’s a fantastic way to sample their quality if you're not ready for a full omakase or just want a quick, elevated snack. I recommend trying the spicy rock shrimp – it was a personal favorite! Even outside of happy hour, the hand rolls are reasonably priced and offer a great variety, including some excellent vegetarian options like avocado and sweet corn. For anyone searching for the 'best affordable omakase NYC' or 'omakase under $100 NYC,' Noz Market should absolutely be at the top of your list. While it doesn't hold a Michelin star itself, you're essentially getting Michelin-quality ingredients and traditional techniques in a more casual, accessible setting. It’s a perfect option if you're looking for an authentic, high-quality sushi experience without the fuss or the $500+ price tag of its famous sibling. It’s a fantastic way to enjoy premium Michelin quality sushi without having to save up for months. Definitely make a reservation if you plan to go for omakase, as spots can fill up, but the hand roll bar is usually more flexible. My visit felt like discovering a true culinary secret in the heart of the Upper East Side!
