NYC’S BEST DESSERTS - part 2 ✨

💞 best desserts in NYC - part 2!

- Yingtao: nian gao was life changing. i love their modern take on a chinese nian gao!

-hakubai: their strawberry shortcake was light, airy, not too sweet, and the best part was the Oishii strawberry on top :)

- Mango Mango Dessert: any of their mango desserts are great, but my personal favorite is their mango sago! i love the mango ice cream and fruit chunks on top

-The Original Chinatown Ice Cream Factory: my FAVORITE ice cream spot in the entire city. partially nostalgia reasons but their ice cream is also really, really, really freaking good. one of our favorite flavors is the matcha oreo ice cream. recommend sampling as many as possible to find your favorite!

- Yingtao: they gave us this kiwi sorbet as a palette cleanser but i wish we got more. it was SO good!

2024/11/24 Edited to

... Read moreSo, you've seen my latest picks for NYC's best desserts (part 2!), featuring everything from the innovative modern nian gao at Yingtao to the refreshing kiwi sorbet and Hakubai's delicate strawberry shortcake. But the truth is, NYC's dessert scene is an endless wonderland, constantly evolving! I wanted to share a few more thoughts on how to really dive deep and discover even more sweet treasures, especially if you're looking for that perfect modern treat or an elevated dessert experience. When I think about "modern cakes NYC," it's not just about traditional bakeries. It's about places that are reinventing classics or creating entirely new flavor profiles and textures. Yingtao's modern nian gao is a prime example – taking a beloved traditional item and giving it a gourmet, contemporary twist. This trend is everywhere in NYC! Look for patisseries that focus on seasonal ingredients, artistic plating, and unexpected flavor combinations. Think deconstructed desserts, mousse cakes with intricate layers, or even savory elements blended with sweet. These spots are perfect for when you want a dessert that's as much a visual feast as it is a taste sensation. Don’t be afraid to try places that specialize in Asian-inspired modern desserts; they often excel at balancing sweetness and showcasing unique ingredients. While my list features some wonderfully refined options, if you're craving something that leans more towards a "fine dining yuzu dessert" vibe, NYC absolutely delivers. You don't always need to go to a Michelin-starred restaurant for an elevated experience. Many specialty dessert shops and upscale cafes are now offering sophisticated pastries and plated desserts. Keep an eye out for unique ingredients like yuzu (a Japanese citrus that's bright and aromatic!), black sesame, matcha, or even exotic spices. Remember that incredible matcha oreo ice cream from The Original Chinatown Ice Cream Factory? It's a fantastic example of a familiar flavor elevated with quality ingredients. The kiwi sorbet from Yingtao, though a palate cleanser, shows how simple, fresh ingredients can be transformed into something truly elegant and memorable with careful preparation. These kinds of spots often focus on texture contrasts and beautiful presentation, making each bite an experience. Sometimes, the best desserts are the ones everyone's buzzing about, that go “viral” for a reason – maybe they’re incredibly photogenic, or just unbelievably delicious! NYC is a hub for these trendy treats. My advice? Don't just stick to the well-known spots. Wander through neighborhoods like the Lower East Side, West Village, or even Flushing, and you'll stumble upon incredible artisan bakeries and dessert cafes. For instance, Mango Mango Dessert's mango sago is a crowd-pleaser for a reason – it’s fresh, vibrant, and perfectly balanced. Ask locals for their secret spots! And if you're like me and love a good strawberry shortcake, Hakubai's version is so light and fresh, it feels almost guilt-free. Always check social media for the latest dessert trends and pop-ups; you might just discover the next big thing before anyone else. Sharing desserts with friends is always the best way to try a variety, so gather your fellow sweet-lovers and make a day out of it. Happy dessert hunting!
