My washer died 😭

It's such a nightmare when your washing machine breaks down, especially when it leaves you with a drum full of dirty water, just like mine did! After I got the clothes out and had to hand scoop out the water, I started thinking about what leads to these kinds of issues and how to prevent them. If your inner drum is left with dirty water because of a malfunction, it’s not just a hassle – it can actually cause more problems down the line. That stagnant, dirty water can quickly become a breeding ground for mold, mildew, and unpleasant odors that can then transfer to your clothes even after you get your machine fixed. Plus, if it’s sitting there for too long, it could potentially damage internal components. Beyond breakdowns, sometimes even working washers can end up with a dirty inner drum. This often happens from detergent residue build-up, hard water deposits, or even lint and fabric softener combining. If you've ever noticed a musty smell from your 'clean' laundry, a dirty drum could be the culprit! So, what can you do? First, if your washer fails to drain and leaves water, always try to manually drain it if safe to do so, or carefully scoop it out like I had to do. This prevents further issues. For general maintenance to keep your inner drum sparkling and prevent future problems: Run a Hot Cycle with Cleaner: Once a month, run a hot wash cycle with nothing in it, using either a specialized washing machine cleaner, two cups of white vinegar, or a quarter cup of baking soda. This helps break down residue. Wipe Down After Each Use: Get into the habit of wiping down the drum, gasket (especially in front-loaders), and detergent dispenser after each load. This helps prevent mold growth. Leave the Door Ajar: After your laundry is done, leave the washer door slightly ajar to allow air circulation. This helps dry out the drum and prevents mildew. Use the Right Detergent: Make sure you’re using the correct amount of high-efficiency (HE) detergent if you have an HE machine. Too much detergent can lead to excessive suds and residue build-up. Check Hoses: Periodically check the drain hose for kinks or blockages that could impede drainage. Even with the best maintenance, sometimes appliances just give up the ghost, like my washer did. But keeping the inner drum clean is a vital step in extending its life and ensuring your clothes truly come out fresh.
