Falsely accused by my student (Pt. 2) 🕊️

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes 🤷🏻‍♀️

In my previous post, I mentioned I was falsely accused by my student for mistreating her and sabotaging her education. This is after WEEKS of putting up with her combative attitude and clear frustration with the course materials. My patience was tested, but I still did what I could to help her.

On Oct. 30, she demanded to speak to me during our class break, which resulted in a heated debate. She had a D in my class, and all the suggestions I'd given her to improve her grade and quality of learning were left ignored. I was SHAKING as she attacked my character, but nevertheless, I stood my ground and explained in great detail why she was getting such a low grade. My class is an ✨introductory class✨ to my university's visual arts and design program, and the fact that she was struggling so much in my class should have shown her that she had no chance in the advanced courses she was so desperate to get into.

The next morning, I received a very disturbed email...FROM HER DAD 🤨 He accused me of rigging my learning management system so his daughter wouldn't be notified when things were due...which was already like ??? I haven't touched my settings in years??? But that's not all—he played the RACISM CARD!!! 🤡 This was particularly stunning to me because 1) I'm a minority, 2) his daughter is Caucasian, and 3) all the other Caucasian students in my class are doing AMAZING 🤯 He threatened to escalate things to the Dean of Students if I didn't comply with his request to improve his daughter's grades IMMEDIATELY.

As much as I wanted to tear him a new one, I prayed reeeall hard, remembered my FERPA training and did not respond (bc that would actually be illegal). I talked to my program director, who I've taught under for a few years, and she sided with me immediately. I started putting together a 10-page document including all the receipts, showing how I tried to help this student despite all her/her dad's accusations. After another talk with my department head, I eventually submitted a CARE report for the student because she just seemed emotionally disturbed.

After this whole debacle, the student failed to show up to class. She did turn in her work—which I left meticulous comments for. She didn't respond to me when I asked her to show me her grade book so Academic Technologies could investigate why she wasn't seeing all her grades and feedback. And so I continued to wait...

Until yesterday, when she didn't show up to class the THIRD TIME 😳 And in my class, you miss 3 days, and you're OUT. I was very clear about that from Day 1. The fact that this student wouldn't even give me another chance to help her is both super cowardly of her and vindicating for me. I AM FREE 🕊️

👉 Moral of the story: Don't mess with people who are trying to do the right thing! And if you're on the receiving end, keep praying and standing for truth!! 🙏🌟

... Read moreAs educators, we pour our hearts into guiding students, but what happens when that dedication is met with false accusations and combative behavior? My recent experience, after being falsely accused by a student, taught me invaluable lessons about resilience, legal boundaries, and the absolute necessity of rigorous documentation. First and foremost, documentation is your strongest shield. In my case, having meticulous records of every interaction, every assignment, every feedback comment, and every attempt to help the student was a game-changer. It allowed me to compile a comprehensive narrative, backed by concrete evidence, that clearly demonstrated my efforts and the veracity of my teaching methods. Think of every email, every grade entry, every conversation summary as a brick in your wall of defense. It might seem tedious in the moment, but when faced with unjust claims, these details become indispensable. Secondly, know your institutional policies and legal frameworks. I remembered my FERPA training, which guided my decision not to respond directly to the angry parent. Understanding these guidelines isn't just about compliance; it's about protecting yourself and maintaining professional boundaries. When a situation escalates, consulting with your program director, department head, or HR is crucial. They are there to support you and ensure due process is followed. Don't be afraid to lean on their expertise and institutional backing. Dealing with aggressive or accusatory parents adds another layer of complexity. It's easy to get drawn into an emotional battle, but maintaining a calm, professional demeanor is paramount. Redirecting communication through official channels, as I did, can prevent further personal attacks and ensure that all discussions are handled appropriately by school administration. Remember, your primary responsibility is to the student's education, and sometimes, parents can complicate that dynamic significantly. The emotional toll of being falsely accused cannot be overstated. There were moments I was shaking, feeling attacked on a personal level despite knowing I was in the right. It's okay to feel that stress and frustration. Finding healthy coping mechanisms – whether it's prayer, talking to a trusted colleague, or simply taking a moment to breathe – is vital for your well-being. The overlay text, 'I was falsely accused but now I'm free,' perfectly captures the immense relief and vindication that comes after navigating such an ordeal. Finally, clear expectations and boundaries from Day 1 are essential. Setting a firm attendance policy, for example, and consistently enforcing it, can prevent misunderstandings and provide objective criteria for student success (or lack thereof). While it might feel strict, it protects both you and the institution from arbitrary accusations. This entire experience reinforced my belief in standing for truth and doing the right thing, no matter how challenging the path. The feeling of freedom and vindication after such a struggle is truly unparalleled, a testament to holding firm to one's principles.

Apple doesn’t fall far from the free. Those narcissists tried to play off your emotions bec they’re probably used to getting what they want that way. Glad that devil in them did not win over you. Good job!!
