How the prophet Samuel points us to Jesus 🙏
Hi friends and Bible study buddies! Had to take a little break, but now we’re back with our study of Jesus throughout the Scriptures. This study is about the prophet Samuel, who was born miraculously, dedicated by his mother Hannah to the temple service at 3 years old (can you imagine?? 👶🏽), heard the audible voice of God all his life, and eventually anointed the first 2 kings of Israel—one of them from which the Messiah would be descended. You might be surprised to see how closely his life and ministry parallel Jesus’!
Also, I had to ask…anyone here watching House of David?? 🙋🏻♀️ It’s a little intense, but beautifully and thoughtfully done. There’s a lot to love about it, but I really enjoy the portrayal of Samuel as this tough but compassionate old man who isn’t afraid to speak God’s words and do His will. May the Lord inspire us all through the story of Samuel! 💪

The life of the prophet Samuel offers profound insights that prefigure the life and mission of Jesus Christ, illustrating a divine continuity throughout Scripture. Samuel's miraculous birth to Hannah, following her earnest prayers, mirrors the miraculous conception of Jesus by the Holy Spirit, each birth signaling God's direct intervention in human history. Both were dedicated to God's service from a young age—Samuel in the temple at three years old, and Jesus aware of His divine mission from childhood. Samuel's close relationship with God is reflected in the biblical record stating that the Lord was with Samuel and that none of his words failed, showcasing his unwavering obedience and faithfulness. Similarly, Jesus grew in wisdom and favor with God and humanity, embodying perfect fellowship with God. Both were called early in life to fulfill God’s purposes—Samuel answered God’s voice as a boy, and Jesus acknowledged His heavenly Father’s work even at twelve. Their ministries were centered on faithfully delivering God's word with authority, regardless of challenges or opposition. Samuel's integrity and purity in a corrupt era point to Jesus’ sinless life, setting examples of holiness that invited resistance but ultimately fulfilled God’s plan. Notably, Samuel served as priest and intercessor, offering sacrifices for Israel; in parallel, Jesus offered Himself as a sacrifice for humanity’s sins and now intercedes eternally on our behalf. As judge and anointer of Israel’s first kings, including Saul and David from whose line the Messiah would come, Samuel foreshadowed Jesus as the righteous Judge and King of kings. Despite this, both figures experienced rejection by their people, demonstrating humanity's resistance to divine authority. These reflections teach us to dedicate our lives fully to God, speak truth courageously, and imitate Christlike character even amid adversity. Understanding Samuel’s role enriches our comprehension of Jesus’ mission and inspires a deeper commitment to living faithfully according to God’s calling.
