One tip I found helpful is to ensure that the water used for boiling the bagels contains honey, as it adds a subtle sweetness and enhances the crust's color and texture. After boiling each bagel for one minute on each side, brushing with egg wash gives them a beautiful golden finish. In my experience, shaping the dough into equal-sized balls helps achieve uniform bagels that cook evenly. It’s important to let the dough rest covered for about 30 minutes before shaping, which allows the gluten to relax and makes the dough easier to handle. This recipe typically yields around 8 bagels, perfect for a family breakfast or brunch. For toppings, you can get creative: classic options like sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or everything bagel seasoning work great, but so do more unique choices like shredded cheese or herbs. Baking at 375°F for 20-25 minutes ensures a chewy interior with a crisp exterior. Lastly, using bread flour and instant yeast as indicated is key to the bagels’ chewy texture and rise. The bread machine’s dough setting takes the guesswork out of kneading and proofing, making this recipe accessible even to beginners. If you want to experiment, try adding cinnamon and raisins to the dough for a sweet twist. Homemade bagels can be a delicious weekend project that your whole family will enjoy!
