The drama!
I can’t be the only one😭
Okay, seriously, I thought I was alone in this, but after seeing that 'POV: Working out with that one dramatic gym girl' post, I just HAVE to share my two cents! It's like every gym has one, right? You're just trying to get your workout in, maybe crush some reps on the PRECOR machine, and then BAM – the drama unfolds. I remember this one time, I was totally in the zone, headphones on, mid-set. And then, out of nowhere, I hear this incredibly loud sigh, followed by what sounded like a theatrical huff. I glanced over, and there she was, standing in front of the mirror, adjusting her leggings for what felt like five full minutes, then dramatically dropping a tiny dumbbell with an exaggerated groan. It wasn't even a heavy weight! It felt like a performance, and honestly, it completely threw off my rhythm. It's not just the dramatic sighs or the mirror hogging, either. I've seen the elaborate photo shoots in front of equipment others are waiting for, the loud phone calls, or the constant need to be the center of attention. Sometimes it’s the person who leaves a trail of sweat and never wipes down the machine, or the one who monopolizes the entire squat rack area with their water bottle, towel, phone, and half-eaten snack. It makes you wonder if they're there to actually work out or just to put on a show! How do you even deal with a dramatic gym girl without being dramatic yourself? Most of the time, I try to mind my own business, keep my headphones in, and focus on my own goals. But it can be genuinely distracting when someone else's 'performance' starts to impact your own workout flow. I've even considered changing my gym times just to avoid certain people! It’s all about finding that balance between being understanding and protecting your own workout space and focus. One thing I've learned is that sometimes, simply ignoring it is the best strategy. If someone is clearly seeking attention, not reacting deprives them of their audience. Other times, a polite, firm interaction might be necessary. For example, if someone is hogging a PRECOR machine you need, a simple, 'Excuse me, are you still using this, or would you mind if I worked in?' can do wonders. It’s tricky because you don’t want to cause a scene, but you also deserve to complete your workout efficiently. It’s fascinating how common this experience is, especially when you start talking to other gym-goers. Everyone seems to have their own 'dramatic gym girl' or 'dramatic gym guy' stories. It really highlights the importance of good gym etiquette. Simple things like re-racking weights, wiping down equipment, not hogging machines, and being mindful of personal space can make the gym a much more pleasant environment for everyone. After all, we're all there for the same reason – to improve our fitness, not to be part of someone else's reality show. I think a little self-awareness goes a long way in the gym. We all want to feel comfortable and motivated, and that means respecting common gym etiquette. So, if you're out there, trying to enjoy your workout session, and you encounter one of these 'dramatic gym girls,' know that you're definitely not the only one who notices!
