One of our screen-time house rules is that the kids have to be regulated before they get a screen.
Luckily, I haven’t had them freak out at an airport yet, but they know screens are coming once we're on the plane. For public tantrums, I’ve always been able to find a quieter spot and wait it out (so far 😅).
Video cred: @Motherhood, honestly.
Managing screen time and toddler tantrums can be a real challenge, especially during travel. From my experience, setting clear rules before reaching for a tablet makes a huge difference. One approach I’ve found useful is to establish a routine where kids know they need to be calm and regulated before they get any screen access. This anticipation actually helps reduce anxiety and resistance. When traveling by plane, the anticipation of screen time can work as a quiet motivator. Kids understand that the screens will come on board, so they are more willing to cooperate beforehand. In public places, when a meltdown starts to brew, finding a quieter area to sit and wait it out has helped me avoid escalating the situation. Sometimes, just removing them from the overstimulating environment helps toddlers calm down faster. I’ve also learned that traditional parenting rules around avoiding screens or snacks as 'bribery' don’t always hold up in real life. When dealing with a toddler meltdown in public, having practical tools like Montessori wooden rainbows or other engaging toys can be lifesavers. They distract kids gently and give parents a moment to regain control. Overall, balancing screen time with behavioral expectations and calm responses to tantrums is key. By setting consistent house rules and being prepared with quiet coping strategies, traveling with toddlers can feel less stressful for everyone involved.
