Your car’s electronics could be a fingerprint?
A surveillance company called Leonardo is marketing SignalTrace, a system that detects electronics traveling together (like phones, smartwatches, fitness trackers, RFID tags and infotainment systems) and uses that combination to help recognize a vehicle.
This uses sensors that are used in conjunction with license plate readers but the sensors could be places in other public places too, it doesn’t require the license plate readers.
To be clear, this is NOT a Flock product, this is a different company, but it shows where this category of surveillance is going. There may be some personal habits that could help, but for the most part this will be about policies. Communities need to ask:
How long is the data kept? Who can access it? Is a warrant required? Is information automatically deleted if it belongs to people not suspected of a crime? These privacy guardrails need to be put in place before adopting the tech because once it’s installed, it’s harder to undo.

Sensors installed in streets, parking lots, or other public areas can continuously collect data, potentially monitoring the movement of many individuals without their explicit knowledge. This raises essential privacy concerns, particularly about how long the data is stored and who gets to access it. From what I’ve seen, communities adopting such technologies need to be proactive in setting strict and transparent policies. Questions about the need for a warrant before accessing data, automatic deletion of information related to innocent people, and limiting data retention periods are critical to prevent misuse. For example, when a system captures data from multiple devices traveling together, it essentially builds a profile that could reveal routines, associations, and personal habits — information that could be misused if not properly regulated. In day-to-day life, I try to minimize the number of connected devices I bring with me in my car, but this is not always practical for most people. Therefore, it’s important that legal frameworks keep pace with these technologies to protect individual rights. Without solid privacy guardrails, once these systems are widely installed, the damage to personal freedoms could be irreversible. Overall, awareness and community dialogue about digital surveillance tech like SignalTrace are vital. It’s not just about technology but about ensuring that privacy and civil liberties remain respected even as surveillance capabilities advance.
