Amarillo Travel Guide

I saw the challenge to create a travel guide for your city and decided to include my favorite spots in Amarillo, Texas!

Amarillo is a prime road tripping city since historic route 66 passes through our downtown area, so even if you aren't vacationing here specifically, you may find yourself passing through. if you do, an easy stop is all our shops on 6th street! (previously route 66).

6th street shops are housed in several historical buildings and have events planned constantly by the route 66 center. many shop owners participate in these events by offering discounts, promotions, or interactive games (like scavenger hunts!) /Aunt Eek's Books and Curiosities

If you stay for a while and need something less expensive than shopping to kill some time, our museum of art is always free and includes tours at no cost. They have new exhibits all the time and will often feature work from Amarillo College students and Amarillo ISD students in addition to their regular collections. /Amarillo Museum of Art

Lastly, you can't visit a Texan cattle kingdom without getting a burger. Buns Over Texas is hands down one of our best local burger joints and is the birthplace of the tea chain phenomenon, HTeaO, that has been taking over cities all over Texas. You can get a cup of one of the original tea flavors in the restaurant or pop next door to Texas Tea (original HTeaO location) for the full roster. /Buns Over Texas

When I was planning my trip, I stumbled upon it, and I'm so glad I made the stop. It’s located right on the Amarillo College Campus, which gives it a really cool, accessible vibe, making it a perfect addition to any Amarillo itinerary, especially for those looking for non-touristy spots. I know sometimes "free museum" can make you think it might be small or not have much to offer, but AMoA totally exceeded my expectations. From the moment you see the distinctive brick building with that eye-catching blue sculpture out front, you know you're in for something interesting. They have a fantastic permanent collection that spans different eras and styles, often focusing on American art of the 20th and 21st centuries, as well as Asian art. What really blew me away, though, was how often they rotate their exhibits. One time I saw some incredible modern pieces, and another visit featured stunning regional art, showcasing the rich cultural landscape of Texas. They’re really committed to showcasing local talent too, frequently featuring work from Amarillo College students and even younger artists from Amarillo ISD. It makes the experience feel very connected to the community and provides a fresh perspective with each visit. Walking through the galleries, I loved the peaceful atmosphere. It's not overwhelmingly large, so you can easily take your time and appreciate each piece without feeling rushed. I spent about an hour and a half there, which felt just right for a thorough but relaxed visit. If you’re lucky, you might even catch one of their free tours – the guides are super knowledgeable and bring the art to life with fascinating stories, making even abstract pieces feel relatable. One thing I highly recommend checking out before you go is their schedule for 'Monthly Events.' They host everything from engaging artist talks and hands-on workshops to family-friendly art days. It’s a fantastic way to deepen your experience, especially if you're traveling with kids or are looking for something more interactive than just viewing static displays. I saw a flyer for a pottery workshop during my last visit, and I almost wished I had more time to join in! It's also super easy to get to, being conveniently located on the Amarillo College Campus. There's usually ample parking, making it a hassle-free stop, whether you're just passing through Amarillo on Route 66 or spending a few days exploring. For anyone looking for a dose of culture without breaking the bank, the Amarillo Museum of Art is an absolute must-visit. It truly adds another layer to the city beyond just the road trip stops and delicious food – giving you a taste of Amarillo's vibrant artistic side that you might otherwise miss. Don't skip this one!
