Choosing a future is never easy.

Eli Sterling is the star pitcher on his high school baseball team and has a bright future in the majors. Then something change’s—he’s angry, moody, and scared.

No matter how hard he works, he always falls short in someone’s eyes. Except for Izzy. She has been his best friend since they were four, and she’s the only one who understands him.

When Eli begins to question everything about who he is and what he truly wants for his future, he finds solace in the one place that can bring him peace—the treehouse that sits between his house and Izzy’s.

Both a blessing and a curse, their bond holds him together as he slowly spirals out of control. Realizing not all is what it seems, Eli learns it’s okay to reach for his dreams.

Eli’s story echoes the real struggles many young adults face when trying to balance dreams with internal and external conflicts. In my own experience, growing up in a small town meant everyone knew your story, which could feel comforting but also incredibly pressuring. Like Eli, many young people find a safe place—a treehouse, a quiet spot, or a close friend—where they can reflect and find solace amid turmoil. This reminds me of the importance of having mental health support and trusted relationships during difficult times. The depiction of Eli’s mood changes and strained family ties brings awareness to how mental health challenges often go unnoticed in high-achieving teens. It’s crucial to recognize these signs early and provide understanding rather than judgment. The mention of Eli falling short in others’ eyes highlights the loneliness that comes with unmet expectations and the comforting role of true friendship, as seen through Izzy’s support. Moreover, the story’s combination of themes—baseball, loss, family conflict, and self-questioning—creates a rich narrative valuable for readers who appreciate authentic coming-of-age stories. It also serves as a reminder: it’s okay to ask for help and to redefine what success means personally, beyond external validation. If you or someone you know is navigating similar feelings of being overwhelmed or lost, finding a safe space—like Eli’s treehouse—can be a first step toward healing. Books like "Soul of Eli" open important conversations about mental health and identity that resonate far beyond small towns or sports arenas.
