Good Rules, Silly Rules

Read moreFrom my personal experience, rules play an essential role in keeping public spaces orderly and safe—for example, a simple rule like 'No eating or drinking' in certain areas helps maintain cleanliness and hygiene, which benefits everyone. However, I have also encountered rules that felt unreasonable, such as being required to smile 24 hours a day or to follow rules blindly without thinking. These sorts of rules can feel oppressive and counterproductive. What I’ve learned is that the best approach is to respect and follow rules that promote community well-being, like keeping spaces clean and safe. But it’s equally important to apply critical thinking and question rules that don’t make sense or harm personal freedom. Blindly following every rule can sometimes lead to ridiculous outcomes or stifle creativity and independent thought. For instance, in workplaces or schools, good rules help create a positive environment, but overly strict or nonsensical rules can cause frustration and reduce morale. In such cases, it’s helpful to voice concerns respectfully and promote constructive changes. Overall, balancing obedience to good rules with thoughtful questioning of silly rules empowers individuals and supports a fairer society. Being mindful about which rules to follow and when to think critically ensures that rules serve people well, rather than the other way around.
