... Read moreOh my gosh, bringing Rudis home has been such an incredible journey already! If you're thinking about getting a Shih Tzu Terrier puppy, let me tell you, they are just the sweetest little bundles of joy. I'd been dreaming of getting a new companion for ages, and when I saw Rudis, with his beautiful black, grey, and tan fur, I just knew he was the one.
The first few days have been a whirlwind of cuddles, naps, and discovering his playful personality. Getting him settled in our car for the ride home was an adventure in itself, making sure he was comfy and safe in his little car seat. It's so important to make that first journey as stress-free as possible for them! Now he loves just lounging around, especially when he gets to nuzzle right into my chest for a nap – it's the most heartwarming thing.
Shih Tzu Terrier mixes, often called 'Shorkies' or 'Shih Tzus Terriers,' are known for being affectionate, playful, and incredibly loyal. They usually inherit the best traits from both parents: the outgoing and energetic side of a Terrier, combined with the gentle and cuddly nature of a Shih Tzu. This makes them fantastic family pets, adaptable to various living situations, whether you're in an apartment or a house with a big yard. Their size is perfect for cuddling, and they typically don't need a huge amount of exercise, though daily walks and playtime are definitely appreciated.
One of the things I love most about Rudis is his unique coat. The black, grey, and tan tones are just stunning, and it's a constant reminder of his mixed heritage. While they're generally low-shedding due to the Shih Tzu influence, regular grooming is a must to keep their fur looking its best and prevent mats. Brushing him has become a sweet bonding ritual for us.
Bringing a new puppy home also means a lot of preparation. Before Rudis even arrived, we made sure to puppy-proof the house. This meant securing loose wires, putting away anything he could chew or swallow, and setting up his own little safe space with a comfy bed and toys. It's amazing how quickly they get into everything! We also stocked up on puppy food, treats, and all the essentials for house training.
Early socialization and training are absolutely key for a Shih Tzu Terrier puppy. They're smart little cookies, but consistency is so important. We've started with basic commands and positive reinforcement, and he's already learning so fast. Taking him out to meet new people and other vaccinated dogs (once he's had his shots, of course) will help him grow into a well-adjusted and confident adult. From puppy pads to chew toys, there's a lot to prepare for, but every moment is so worth it. The joy Rudis has brought into my life is immeasurable, and I can't wait to share more of our journey together!
