I Thought I Was Saving Seven Tomatoes, but I Was Revisiting a Piece of Myself.
“I Thought I Was Saving Seven Tomatoes… Turns Out, I Was Revisiting a Piece of Myself.” 🍅❤️
Sometimes becoming doesn’t look like a big transformation.
Sometimes it looks like seven tomatoes sitting on your kitchen counter. 🍅❤️
My mom gave me tomatoes from her garden, and I knew I couldn’t eat all of them raw before they went bad. As I stood there trying to figure out what to do with them, I thought about something I hadn’t had in years…
Tomato pudding.
My grandma used to make it for me when I was growing up. I’ve said so many times over the years, “One day I’m going to make some.”
Well… one day finally became that day.
I started cutting up those tomatoes and remembering. Remembering Grandma. Remembering something I loved as a little girl. Remembering how she was always willing to try something different in the kitchen.
And apparently, I inherited that part too. 😂
Because of course I couldn’t just leave the recipe alone.
I mixed white bread with graham crackers, used brown sugar instead of white, added just a little butter and a dash of vanilla, and thought…
Well, we’re committed now. 🤣
And you know what?
It was GOOD. ❤️
Good enough that I stopped and wrote down exactly what I did in my recipe book.
What started with tomatoes from my mother’s garden became a dish that reminded me of my grandmother… made with my own little twist.
Three generations found their way into one little pan.
Mama grew them.
Grandma gave me the memory.
And I made it my own. ❤️
That stayed with me.
Because I’m learning that becoming isn’t always about leaving the old you behind.
Sometimes it’s about going back and picking up the pieces of yourself that still belong in the woman you’re becoming.
I thought I was just trying not to waste seven tomatoes.
Turns out, I was revisiting a piece of myself. 🍅❤️👑
And apparently… sometimes those pieces come with graham crackers. 🤣

Reflecting on my own cooking experiences, I’ve found that certain recipes hold a special place beyond just their flavors—they are vessels of memory and connection. Tomato pudding, for example, is not a widely known dish, but it brings a unique comfort rooted in tradition and family storytelling. When I tried experimenting with tomatoes gifted from a friend’s garden, I realized how versatile tomatoes can be—not only raw or in salads but also transformed into unexpected dishes with a nostalgic soul. The use of brown sugar, graham crackers, and vanilla in this pudding creates a wonderful balance of sweetness and warmth that complements the acidity of the tomatoes beautifully. Incorporating ingredients like light brown sugar and vanilla (as seen in the OCR-recognized elements from the article) elevates the pudding’s flavors and gives it a homemade richness reminiscent of the past, yet adapted for modern tastes. This blend invites home cooks to embrace culinary creativity while honoring time-honored family recipes. I encourage anyone with heirloom produce or special ingredients from their family garden to experiment with traditional recipes passed down through generations. Making slight changes—like substituting ingredients or adding your own touch—can make these foods more personal and relevant to your life today. It’s an empowering way to continuously ‘become’ who you are by weaving your past, present, and future together in the kitchen. Ultimately, dishes like tomato pudding do far more than satisfy hunger; they evoke stories, celebrations, and the warmth of shared heritage. By revisiting these recipes, we invite a part of our history to live on, nourishing both body and soul. And sometimes, the simplest kitchen moments—like saving seven tomatoes—become the most meaningful journeys of self-discovery.
