BOOK REVIEW!!

So, I finally picked up 'The Friend Zone' by Abby Jimenez, mostly because I needed something engaging for a long drive and decided to go with the audiobook version. The turquoise cover, which I've seen pop up on my feed, always looked so inviting with its cute illustrated couple, hinting at a fun, lighthearted romance. While I didn't dislike it, I have to admit it wasn't my absolute favorite read. I went in with some expectations, given Abby Jimenez's popularity in the romance world, and while it had its moments, some elements just didn't quite land for me. The characters, Kristen and Josh, definitely had their charm. I enjoyed their banter and the little quirks the author gave them – they felt real and relatable, which is always a huge plus for me in a romance novel. Their initial chemistry was undeniable, and those early interactions really pulled me into their story. However, the plot itself felt a bit jarring in places. There were some turns that made me scratch my head, and I found myself wishing for a smoother progression. The biggest hurdle for me, honestly, was the 'almost-cheating' trope that emerged. It's a personal preference, but that particular storyline often creates a level of angst and discomfort that can be hard for me to get past in a feel-good romance. It shifted the tone for me, and I kept waiting for it to resolve in a way that felt truly satisfying, which it eventually did, but the journey through it was a bit bumpy. If you're someone who enjoys a contemporary romance with a strong focus on character development and doesn't mind a bit of a dramatic plot, 'The Friend Zone' might still be a good fit for you. Abby Jimenez generally excels at creating emotional depth, and that was certainly present. For me, as an avid reader of the genre, I usually gravitate towards stories with less manufactured drama and more organic relationship growth. It makes me wonder if her other books handle similar themes differently or if this was just a unique plot choice for this particular story. Overall, it was a perfectly fine read for a road trip, but it didn't quite reach the five-star status for me personally, landing at a solid three stars. I'd still recommend giving it a try if you're curious, especially if you're an audiobook fan looking for something to pass the time!
