Beyond the core ingredients listed, you can customize your blend by infusing your base with herbs such as dried mullein or thyme—both known for their lung-supportive properties. I’ve personally found that adding mullein infused into the coconut oil before melting enhances the soothing effects, especially during cold season. When applying this vapor rub, use a small amount to avoid skin irritation and always test on a small patch of skin first. Rubbing it on your chest, throat, and upper back helps relieve congestion and promotes easier breathing. Applying it gently under the nose (being careful to avoid nostrils) can offer sinus relief too, which is a simple hack I found very effective on stuffy days. The combination of eucalyptus and peppermint oils works synergistically to open airways and provide a cooling sensation, while tea tree oil adds antimicrobial benefits that may help fight off illness-causing germs. Lavender oil not only calms the senses but also eases coughing and chest tightness, making this rub a holistic remedy that targets multiple symptoms. This DIY vapor rub can be used before bedtime to support restful sleep by easing breathing difficulties. I recommend storing the rub in a small airtight glass jar to maintain its freshness and potency. Natural products like these are excellent for those who prefer chemical-free wellness options and enjoy the process of hands-on self-care. Remember, this rub is for external use only and should not be applied inside the nostrils or given to young children under two without consulting a healthcare provider. By making your own vapor rub, you gain control over the ingredients and create a personalized remedy that fits your needs perfectly.
