my dad is a big softie- pony’s name was Dusty cuz he was dirty as hell when he showed up- I have vivid memories of my mom and dad both getting thrown off this crazy lil thing trying to get it to let me ride it. Then I got on it and it threw me quite a few times too. Even broke a saddle throwing me. But my dad always told me never to quit when you’re afraid, so I got back on and kept trying. Best lesson I ever learned 🪽
I remember my dad always joking, 'You want a horse? It'll have to fall out of the sky!' Little did I know, fate had a quirky sense of humor. Coming home from Mount Vernon one day, I spotted a little white pony in a barnyard. My heart pounded! Was I dreaming? It felt like a true 'fall out of the sky' moment, a wish suddenly granted. Later, Dad explained he'd found this little guy, Dusty, destined for the glue factory. He literally rescued him from a grim fate at the grain elevator, bringing him home. 'I don't even know if you can ride it,' Dad said, and he was right. Dusty was completely 'not broken at all' – a wild spirit with a mind of his own. Oh, the early days with Dusty! My mom and dad both got their fair share of tumbles trying to get him rideable for me. Then it was my turn, and let me tell you, that crazy little thing threw me more times than I can count. One time, he even broke a saddle with his antics! It was frustrating, scary, and sometimes I just wanted to give up. The fear was real, but so was the longing to ride him. But my dad, bless his heart, wouldn't let me. His words echo in my mind to this day: 'Never quit when you're afraid.' So, I picked myself up, dusted myself off, and got back on. Every single time. It wasn't just about riding Dusty; it was about conquering my fear, building resilience, and learning the power of perseverance. That lesson, learned on the back of a feisty pony, has served me throughout my life. Looking back, my 'first horse' wasn't just a pet; he was a teacher. The bond we formed, through all the challenges and triumphs, was incredibly special. It taught me patience, understanding, and that some of the greatest rewards come from sticking with something difficult. Every horse owner has a unique journey, filled with moments that truly shape them. Whether it's a wild pony or a seasoned companion, these animals have a way of imparting invaluable wisdom. It's truly amazing how a little horse rescued from the brink can bring so much meaning and strength into your life. What started as a dream for a pony became a profound journey of self-discovery and a lifelong appreciation for the spirit of these incredible creatures.
