Caffeine Intake During Pregnancy
During pregnancy we’re TIRED.. especially if we have other kiddos, but we can’t ignore safe caffeine consumption.
It is recommended to take in a maximum of 200 milligrams of caffeine per day.
That’s about two cups of coffee.
Soemthing I like to do is have one normal cup of hot coffee in the morning and do 1/2 espresso, 1/2 decaf in the afternoon.

During pregnancy, that feeling of being constantly tired is SO real, especially when juggling other responsibilities. It’s hard to ignore the need for a little pick-me-up, but it’s crucial to make sure we’re consuming caffeine safely. The general guideline is to keep your intake to a maximum of 200 milligrams per day. But what does that really look like in your daily coffee routine? Initially, I thought, “Okay, two cups of coffee, no problem!” But I quickly learned that not all coffee is created equal. A standard 8-ounce cup of drip coffee might have around 95mg, but a larger, stronger brew from your favorite coffee shop could easily push you over the limit with just one serving! That’s why I started paying closer attention to the actual caffeine content. For instance, a single shot of espresso usually contains about 64mg. This knowledge helped me create my go-to routine: one regular hot coffee in the morning, and then for my afternoon treat, I opt for a half-espresso, half-decaf drink. This way, I get that comforting coffee experience without exceeding my 200 milligrams per day safety net. I even love to add a splash of cinnamon coffee creamer to make it feel extra special! Beyond just coffee, it’s helpful to be aware of other sources of caffeine. Black teas, green teas, some sodas, and even chocolate can contribute to your daily total. If you're looking for pregnancy safe caffeine drinks or just want to cut back, try exploring herbal teas like peppermint or ginger, which can be soothing and hydrating. Decaf coffee is also a fantastic option when you crave the taste and ritual but don't need the jolt. I've found that swapping out one regular coffee for a decaf latte, or even just hot water with lemon, can make a big difference in managing my overall intake. Cutting back if you're used to more than 200mg can be a challenge, but I found that gradually reducing my intake worked best. Maybe try a half-caf for a few days, then move to mostly decaf. Staying well-hydrated with water throughout the day also helps combat that dragging feeling. Remember, the 200 milligrams per day limit is in place because caffeine can cross the placenta, so being mindful helps ensure the best outcome for both you and your little one. It’s all about finding that balance where you feel good and confident in your choices!
