... Read moreLately, I've found myself getting really caught up in the daily grind – the endless to-do lists, the worries about finances, chasing after the latest trends, and just generally feeling overwhelmed by all the 'stuff' of life. It’s easy to feel drained and lose sight of what truly matters. That’s why Colossians 3:2 has become such a cornerstone verse for me. It says, 'So think about the good things that are there in heaven above. Do not think only about things that are on the earth.' (EASY version). This simple verse, particularly the powerful directive to 'set your minds on things above, not on earthly things,' has been a game-changer for my perspective. What does it really mean to 'set your mind on things above'? For me, it's not about ignoring my responsibilities or becoming detached from reality. Instead, it's about shifting my primary focus from temporary, material concerns to eternal, spiritual truths. It’s about remembering that my true identity and my ultimate hope aren't found in what I possess or achieve on earth, but in something far greater. 'Things above' can encompass so much more than just a literal heaven. It’s about cultivating virtues like love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. It’s about seeking justice, showing compassion, forgiving others, and living with a purpose that extends beyond myself. When I focus on these 'things above,' my daily actions start to align with a higher calling. On the flip side, 'earthly things' aren't inherently bad, but they can become consuming if we let them. For me, these include anxieties about the future, comparing myself to others, chasing fleeting pleasures, or getting too bogged down by material possessions. It’s a constant battle to avoid letting these distractions dominate my thoughts and energy. The verse isn't asking us to despise the earth, but to not let our minds be only on it. It’s a call to prioritize. So, how do I practically set my mind on things above? Here are a few strategies I’ve found helpful: Start the day with intention: Instead of immediately checking my phone, I try to spend a few minutes reflecting on gratitude, reading an inspiring passage, or simply meditating on positive, uplifting thoughts. This helps anchor my mind before the day's demands kick in. Mindful moments throughout the day: When I feel overwhelmed or stressed, I take a deep breath and consciously redirect my thoughts. I ask myself, 'Is this worry serving my higher purpose?' or 'What truly matters in this situation?' This simple check-in helps me detach from immediate frustrations. Engage in acts of service: Helping others, even in small ways, immediately shifts my focus from my own problems to something bigger. It reminds me of the joy that comes from giving and connecting with others on a deeper level. Limit digital distractions: Social media and constant news cycles can easily pull my mind into 'earthly things' – comparison, fear, or gossip. Setting boundaries with screen time helps clear mental space for more meaningful reflection. Practice gratitude: Actively acknowledging the blessings in my life, both big and small, helps me appreciate the good things that are already present, reminding me of a benevolent source beyond my control. Embracing Colossians 3:2 has truly transformed my daily outlook. It’s a continuous journey, but consciously choosing to set my mind on things above, not on earthly things has brought a newfound sense of peace, purpose, and resilience. It helps me navigate the inevitable challenges of life with a clearer perspective, knowing that my ultimate hope lies beyond what I can see right now.
