Foodie Guide to Vienna ⬇️

Cover: Sachertorte at Café Sperl

1. Plachutta - I’ve been to two different locations and have throughly enjoyed the schnitzel at both. I’d order their potato salad (not really a salad just well flavored potato slices), but skip the Viennese cabbage pasta.

2. Aida - I didn’t get a chance to go on my second trip to Vienna so that’s why the intercontinental’s strudel is featured instead. But I love a pleasantly pink place with good desserts.

3. To Ellinikon - I grew up near the Greek part of NYC so I’m a little picky but this was a good meal and the serving size was great for us!

4. Starbucks - My favorite Starbucks is prob HK, but what I appreciate about this chain is how menu items can differ from country to country. It’s also where I collect tumblers and mini mugs from lol

5. Café Central - Likely the most gorgeous café I’ve ever set foot in. I’ve gotten lucky both times I went the wait wasn’t too bad. This is the perfect place to unwind with a good friend and sweet treat.

Bonus: Café Telegraph - Their syrinki 🤤🤤🤤 bruh… one of my favorite breakfasts 🥞 #viennafood #vienna #austriafood #viennaguide

... Read moreOkay, so you've heard about Sachertorte and Café Central, right? But let me tell you, experiencing them in Vienna is a whole different ball game. I went in with high expectations, and frankly, some places really delivered! First, let's talk about that iconic Sachertorte. While my cover photo shows the one from Café Sperl (which was divine, by the way!), many ask about it at Café Central. While Café Central is famous for its grand atmosphere and incredible Kaiserschmarrn (seriously, if you go, get it – the OCR was right, it's a must!), the original Sachertorte battle is usually between Hotel Sacher and Demel. My personal take? Try them both if you can! The one at Sperl was rich, moist, and perfectly balanced, not overly sweet. It's truly a chocolate lover's dream, often served with a dollop of unsweetened whipped cream to cut through the richness. Now, about Café Central. This place isn't just a café; it's an institution. Walking in felt like stepping back in time. The high vaulted ceilings, the marble pillars, the live piano music... it's pure Viennese elegance. I've been lucky enough to visit twice, and the wait wasn't too bad, but I’ve heard stories! My advice: try to go mid-morning or later afternoon between typical lunch and dinner rushes. Beyond the ambiance, their coffee is superb, and as I mentioned, their Kaiserschmarrn is legendary. It’s a fluffy, shredded pancake dish, often served with stewed plums or apple compote. It's hearty, sweet, and absolutely perfect for a luxurious breakfast or an afternoon treat. Don't leave without trying it! And while we're on the topic of sweets, you can't forget Apfelstrudel. The one at the Intercontinental Vienna (as hinted in my OCR!) was surprisingly good, but for a true local experience, many bakeries offer fantastic versions. What I love is the thinly sliced apples, often spiced with cinnamon, wrapped in delicate pastry. It’s less intensely sweet than Sachertorte, making it a great option if you prefer something a bit lighter. Beyond the famous spots, don't shy away from just popping into a local bakery. I stumbled upon some amazing treats just by wandering. And if you’re looking for a pop of color and equally delightful desserts, Aida (that pink place mentioned in my list!) is a charming experience. Their cakes and pastries are as pretty as the decor. Eating in Vienna isn't just about the food; it's about the entire experience. From the grand cafes like Café Central to the traditional eateries like Plachutta (where the schnitzel is definitely worth it, and that 'potato salad' is a revelation!), every meal felt like an event. Even my Greek food fix at To Ellinikon was a pleasant surprise, reminding me of home. And yes, even a stop at Starbucks can be interesting to see regional menu variations and grab a souvenir mug! So, when you're planning your culinary adventure in Vienna, make sure to save room for all the sweet treats. It's an essential part of the city's charm!
