Pros & Cons About Working Overnight

I love overnight however there are many pros and cons that come with working that shift it’s also known as the graveyard 🪦 shift.

Whether you start at 8PM or 10 PM this shift can be brutal on your body, mind, and soul sucking the life out of you!

⚠️disclaimer: I have a love and hate relationship with the overnight shift but overall I am very grateful to work the shift I work since it’s honestly easier on my schedule.

✅Pros:

1. Days ahead of you: If you leave at 7AM or 10AM, you have the whole day ahead of you! If you are a student, an overnight shift would be very good for you because you can make it to class by either 8AM or 9AM.

2. Easy to make plans: Meeting out for brunch, a spa day, a nice lunch out and seeing your love ones.

3. 💰Pay difference: Did you know that some if not most overnight shifts have a pay difference meaning you’ll be getting a higher pay? It can be $1.50 or a $5.00 difference, while your other colleagues maybe on a base pay, you can actually make more than them just by being overnight!!!

4. Less traffic: This should be self explanatory because who wants to run into traffic???? The only traffic I experience is in the morning, because of school zones when I’m going home.

5. Highups: You will never have to deal with higher ups in corporate because they’re to lazy and tired to come in between the times of 8PM-5AM.

❌Cons:

1. Safety: There are many dangerous and suspicious folks walking around the parking lot. There has been more than one incident overnight in the past year that I recall, lots of random blackouts, like legit light off for 2-3 hours. One pro in this con is that since we see the same faces all of the time, it’s very easy to pinpoint who is who and who is out of place.

2. Limited services: I have an hour lunch and whenever I don’t meal prep I am only limited to McDonald’s, Denny’s, IHOP, Taco Bell, Miami Subs, and Burger King and some of these establishments don’t even want to work overnight so they pretend to be “close” to not actually work when they’re actually 24HRS.

3. Health issues/Sleeping Issues: Your brain and body is rewired. My stress levels have increased due to the fact that overnight is the most understaff because no one wants to work at night as well as management not wanting to hire anyone knowing people actually want to work. It always pains me to see morning and afternoon shift have so many new faces but for the past 2 years I’ve seen the same faces.

4. Family & Friends: If you don’t have a love one that is known for staying up in the middle of the night it’s boring! You can’t talk to anyone but your coworkers 😭 there’s nothing wrong with that but dang. My bf stays up until 1AM maybe 2 if I’m lucky. And I’m always wondering who else is up because I don’t want to bother anyone at home.

I think I’ve vented enough 😭 Like I said I am very grateful for my job but the stress is too much. I’m sleeping more than usual, which is good since I’m getting the rest I need but I’m missing out on so much because I’m too exhausted.

... Read moreStepping into the world of overnight work, or the 'graveyard shift' as many call it, is a unique experience. While my initial article touched on the immediate pros and cons of night shift, there's so much more to consider beyond the surface. I've been there, navigating the quiet hours and the unexpected challenges, and I want to share a deeper dive into making this lifestyle work, or deciding if it's truly worth it for you. First, let's talk about health, which is arguably the biggest adjustment. Your body's internal clock, your circadian rhythm, is designed for daytime activity and nighttime rest. When you flip that, it's like constantly battling jet lag. I've found that prioritizing sleep quality is non-negotiable. Invest in blackout curtains, a comfortable eye mask, and earplugs. Try to maintain a consistent sleep schedule even on your days off, as tempting as it is to revert to a 'normal' routine. This consistency helps your body adapt rather than constantly fighting against itself. Nutrition is another overlooked aspect; reaching for quick, unhealthy snacks is easy when you're tired. Meal prepping healthy, balanced meals for your 'night-day' can make a huge difference in your energy levels and overall well-being. Don't forget about mental health either; the isolation can be real. Find ways to unwind, whether it's a hobby, light exercise, or simply journaling your thoughts. When it comes to those amazing 'pros' like having your days free, really lean into them! Instead of just sleeping away your free time, schedule appointments, pursue hobbies, or enjoy quiet mornings at the gym when everyone else is at work. This is where the flexibility of working overnight truly shines. That pay difference can also be a significant boost. Consider setting financial goals specifically linked to that extra income, whether it's saving for a down payment, paying off debt, or investing in yourself. It makes the trade-offs feel more rewarding. Now, for mitigating the 'cons'. Safety, especially for solo commuters, is a genuine concern. Always be aware of your surroundings, have your keys ready, and consider personal safety alarms. If your workplace allows, try to walk with a coworker to your cars. For the limited food services, this is where creativity comes in! Explore meal delivery services that operate late, or organize a potluck/meal-sharing system with your coworkers. I've learned to appreciate my packed lunches more than ever. The social aspect can be tough. It feels like you're living on a different planet sometimes. My tip? Be proactive about scheduling. Instead of waiting for friends or family to remember you're awake, reach out and suggest times that work for your unique schedule. Maybe it's a brunch date after your shift, or a late-night video call. Finding other night shift workers, even online, can provide a great sense of community and understanding. We often share similar struggles and triumphs! For those wondering about night vs overnight shift specifics or if it's right for industries like logistics jobs, the core experience remains similar. The demands might change – perhaps more physical labor in a warehouse, or intense focus in a control room – but the impact on your body clock and social life is universal. The question of "is it worth it?" truly depends on your personal circumstances, goals, and how well you implement strategies to manage the challenges. It's a demanding path, but with the right preparation and self-care, it can be incredibly rewarding.
