But you know what is both equally Mexican and Mexican American? It’s the mentality of never supporting and never wanting to see a Mexican/mexican American doing better than you. There’s so many haters in the culture that just like to talk sh*t, and for so many people it doesn’t matter what you do, you’ll never be enough. So if that’s you, perhaps check yourself and get some therapy.
In my experience, it's tough seeing so many talented Mexican and Mexican American individuals hold back or struggle because of the negative attitudes within the community. This isn't just about external obstacles but also internal cultural hurdles like jealousy or lack of support. I remember a time when I achieved something significant, and instead of receiving encouragement, I got subtle negativity or downplaying comments. It was disheartening but also a wake-up call. What helped me was seeking out mentors and friends who genuinely supported my growth without judgment. It’s crucial to surround ourselves with people who celebrate our successes instead of undermining them. Therapy or counseling can also be a beneficial tool when dealing with deep-seated issues about self-worth or cultural pressures. Recognizing this mentality and actively working against it can help build a more supportive and uplifting environment. Moreover, opening conversations about these cultural dynamics in safe spaces encourages collective healing and understanding. Sharing personal stories can dismantle toxic mindsets and foster pride in our achievements. Remember, supporting each other uplifts the entire community and helps break the cycle of negativity. When one of us thrives, it's a victory for all of us.
