Craft idea for a 4 year old!

We both love getting creative and crafty, and this activity only took about 20 minutes and was super fun.

I bought a huge craft supply set and this book of 99 craft ideas came with!

This was one of his first times really using scissors, and the first beginning was rough. By the end, he was so much better at holding the scissors and cutting straight lines!!

This made me realize how many other skills we will need to hone before pre-k starts in August.

... Read moreEngaging young children in craft projects is not only a wonderful way to spend quality time together, but it also supports important developmental milestones. When working with a 4-year-old, patience and encouragement are key, especially when introducing tools like scissors for the first time. In one recent craft session, we created a colorful pinwheel decoration that combined fun and learning. Using simple supplies such as two different colored sheets of craft paper, buttons, gem stickers, and popsicle sticks, this project took about 20 minutes but offered great skill-building opportunities. Cutting straight lines and managing the paper helped improve hand-eye coordination and fine motor control, essential skills for preschool readiness. The step-by-step process involves folding, cutting diagonal slits from the corners without cutting through, and layering the papers to form the pinwheel shape. Adding decorative touches like buttons or diamond stickers made it engaging and visually appealing for the little one, encouraging creativity and pride in their work. Additionally, crafts like this help in developing concentration, following instructions, and even introduce basic concepts like shapes and symmetry. It’s helpful to create a comfortable crafting environment with all materials organized and within reach, making it easy for toddlers to explore and experiment safely. Remember, the goal is not perfection but the process of learning and enjoying creativity. Celebrate every small success, such as initially struggling with scissors and then cutting straight lines after some practice. These moments are encouraging and boost confidence. Crafting together also opens doors to conversations about upcoming milestones—like preparing for pre-kindergarten—and the skills your child will continue to build, from scissors to coloring and beyond. Follow along for more practical, toddler-friendly craft ideas that fit into busy family life while offering great developmental benefits.
