Bramble, my Wood Woad Paladin

This is by far my favorite character I’ve ever made, especially for DnD, but unfortunately that campaign isn’t happening anymore.

Bramble is/was an Oath of the Watchers Paladin who was created by a human child using Druidic magic. He was very dumb, but VERY charismatic!

... Read moreIt’s truly a blast to create unique characters for DnD, and my Wood Woad Paladin, Bramble, was definitely one of a kind! Since you were interested in learning more about Wood Woads and the Oath of the Watchers, let me share some insights that might help you craft your own memorable character or understand mine better. First off, let's talk about Wood Woads in DnD 5e. For those unfamiliar, Wood Woads are fascinating plant creatures, typically found guarding sacred groves or powerful druids. In official lore, they're often presented as neutral evil guardians, fiercely protective of their assigned duties, sometimes to a destructive degree. However, the beauty of DnD is that you can adapt anything! As a player character, a Wood Woad offers incredible roleplaying opportunities. Imagine a being intrinsically tied to the forest, perhaps awakened by powerful magic (like Bramble, who was created by a child's druidic magic!), now venturing into the wider world. Their typical traits include being quite resilient and having a strong connection to nature. While they might not be the most verbose or intellectually brilliant (like my 'very dumb' Bramble!), their innate wisdom of the forest and unwavering loyalty can shine through. When designing a Wood Woad PC, consider their connection to their original grove, what pulled them away, and how they interact with urban environments. Next, let's delve into the Oath of the Watchers Paladin. This is such a cool oath for a paladin who feels the call to protect the world from extraplanar threats – think aberrations, celestials, elementals, fey, and fiends. Unlike some paladins focused on justice or devotion, Watchers are the first line of defense against things that don't belong. Their tenets usually revolve around vigilance, allyship, and protecting the innocent from these otherworldly incursions. Mechanically, they get some fantastic spells like *alarm*, *detect magic*, and later, counterspell and *aura of the warding*. Their Channel Divinity options allow them to abjure the otherworldly and boost allies' initiative, making them excellent tactical defenders. If you're wondering how to get 'keys of oaths' for a Watchers paladin, it's not about a literal key, but about truly embodying these tenets – being ever watchful, forming bonds with those who fight alongside you, and never letting your guard down against threats from beyond. This contrasts nicely with the idea of a 'fallen paladin's hammer,' as Watchers are about preventing the fall of reality itself! Playing a character like Bramble, who was 'very dumb, but VERY charismatic,' is a fantastic challenge. How do you balance those traits? Maybe his charisma comes from his earnestness and unique perspective, or perhaps his strong, silent presence and natural connection to the land. I found that having a clear visual in mind, like a 'mini for reference' from my art process, really helped me embody him. He might not understand complex social cues, but his simple, honest intentions and formidable presence would draw people to him. Think about how his Wood Woad nature influences his paladin duties. Does he interpret his oath tenets in a more literal, nature-bound way? Does he view urban decay as an extraplanar threat to the natural order? Even though my campaign with Bramble ended, the joy of creating and imagining him lives on. Crafting a D&D character is like building a story, and exploring unique combinations like a Wood Woad Paladin makes it even more rewarding. Don't be afraid to experiment with races and classes that aren't typically paired; that's where the most memorable adventurers often come from! While I haven't played too many "dnd like video games" that capture this specific character type, the thrill of tabletop D&D allows for unmatched creative freedom.
