⛓ïļTeeth and tenderness. Chains and charm. A love story only a monster could tell...ðŸŦ€

Cobbled together from bones, rusted chains, and remnants of the dead, Shesheshen should be nothing more than a nightmare - and yet there's something hauntingly magnetic about her.

Hunted and battered to the brink of death, Shesheshen expects only the end. What she finds instead is a human - Homily, fierce in spirit, foolish in kindness, a woman who dares to keep her alive. In that impossible meeting of monster and human, hunger twists into longing, and survival gives way to something dangerously close to love.

But monsters are not meant for unscarred happy endings. Curses sink their claws deep, families guard secrets that rot in the dark, and every step closer to Homily drags Shesheshen further toward ruin. Love, for a creature stitched from bones and shadows, was never meant to come without blood.

Wiswell crafts a tale that feels like a fairytale turned inside out - gruesome yet tender, laced with wit and aching vulnerability. It reads like something Tim Burton might dream up in candlelight: eerie and offbeat, darkly funny, but with a heart that refuses to stop beating. By the end, I wasn't merely unsettled - I was bewitched by a love story dripping in ichor and stitched together with hope.

This is the kind of book that proves even monsters can love, and that love can be just as messy, bloody, and beautiful as we are. Perfect for readers who want their shadows with a bit of heart...

💎Tell me: Do you read for the horror, the heart, or the strange alchemy of both?ðŸŠĒ

... Read moreI've been hearing whispers about John Wiswell's 'Someone You Can Build a Nest In' for a while, and after finally diving in, I can honestly say it lives up to the hype! What first drew me in, beyond the intriguing title, was definitely the book cover. I mean, how could you not be captivated? It’s a masterpiece that perfectly encapsulates the dark, whimsical, and slightly unsettling vibe of the story. I love how it features a striking dark witch, complete with tentacles, alongside a seemingly small human figure, all bound by chains and eerie, spooky elements. The color palette of purple, black, and neon green immediately signals that this isn't your average romance – it's something gothic, mysterious, and utterly unique. The image of a hand with gothic-style nails holding the book against a furry background in the promotional material also just added to the whole aesthetic and made me want to pick it up even more. It truly sets the stage for the unconventional love story within. And that story, centered around Shesheshen and Homily, is just incredible. I was absolutely fascinated by Shesheshen, a creature literally cobbled together from bones and chains, who should be terrifying but somehow evokes such vulnerability. Her journey from being a nightmare to finding something dangerously close to love with Homily is heartbreakingly beautiful. Homily, on the other hand, is the human anchor in this strange world – fierce, kind, and brave enough to see past the monstrous exterior. Their dynamic isn't just about opposites attracting; it’s about two beings, one literally stitched together and the other finding strength in compassion, navigating a world that isn't ready for their bond. Their relationship truly explores what it means to be human, and what it means to love, even when society deems it impossible or 'monstrous.' John Wiswell has such a unique voice that makes this book stand out in the monster romance genre. He manages to weave a narrative that feels both gruesome and incredibly tender, a true fairytale turned inside out. His writing style reminded me of something Tim Burton might conjure, full of dark whimsy, offbeat humor, and a surprising amount of heart. It’s not often you find a book that can make you squirm at the imagery of bones and ichor, yet simultaneously root for a love story with such fierce emotional depth. Wiswell doesn't shy away from the darker aspects of his characters or their world, but he always infuses it with a profound sense of humanity, or perhaps, *monster-ity*, that makes them utterly relatable despite their fantastical nature. For anyone who, like me, is drawn to monster romance, this book is an absolute must-read. It redefines the genre by pushing boundaries and exploring themes of identity, acceptance, and the true meaning of love in the most unexpected places. It's perfect for readers who enjoy a blend of horror, romance, and literary craft that challenges traditional notions of beauty and connection. 'Someone You Can Build a Nest In' isn't just a book; it's an experience that will leave you thinking long after you turn the last page, proving that sometimes, the most beautiful love stories are found in the darkest corners.
