Book Review ๐ | Lights Out ๐
oh. my. God.
listen.
Like probably alot of you, I heard snippets of this book on Tik Tok and found myself CACKLING. I got curious and thank God for Spotify premium because I slapped this bad boy on and I was hooked immediately.
This is a dark romance but you will be laughing your butt off.
Ally is like alot of us that love dark romance, getting sucked into masktok and quietly (well in her case not quietly) liking thirst traps left and right and there's that one creator that is just perfection. He's everything she loves. So, after long 12 to 16 hour shifts of being a trauma nurse Ally goes home to her fur baby Fred the cat and scrolls her favorite account.
Then there is Josh an anxious guy who just wants the girl of his dreams but is also a computer whizz and just casually watches her every move via the hospital cameras.
These two collide in a hilarious series of highjinks and some crazy situations. A golden retriever meeting someone just as fucked up as him - if not more.
If you're looking to laugh, enjoy some damn good spice scenes, and fall in love with your next book bf then yes - I recommend this to you.
TW: stalking, mention of ๐, unaliving
I feel like this is a great book to dip your toes into the dark romance genre for sure. But please, if these things are triggering to you it's best to avoid.

Okay, so you've seen 'Lights Out' all over BookTok, right? And maybe, like me, you're curious about diving into a dark romance that promises laughs alongside the intensity. Let me tell you, this book delivers a wild ride! First off, let's talk about the dark romance themes that make 'Lights Out' stand out. This isn't your grandma's romance novel, that's for sure. Navessa Allen doesn't shy away from themes like stalking, which is a major plot point from Josh's perspective. What makes it fascinating is how the author manages to blend this morally ambiguous behavior with genuine character development and, surprisingly, a lot of humor. It explores the blurred lines between obsession and devotion, and how characters can be deeply flawed yet still incredibly captivating. The initial setup with Josh watching Ally through hospital cameras definitely sets a creepy, thrilling tone, but then the story takes so many unexpected turns. It really makes you think about what youโre willing to accept in a fictional romance. One of the burning questions I had, and I know many of you did too, was 'is Lights Out funny?' And my answer is a resounding YES! The humor comes from the sheer absurdity of some situations and the witty banter between Ally and Josh. Ally's internal monologue is gold, and Josh, despite his... unique hobbies, has a surprisingly charming awkwardness. It's the kind of humor that eases the tension without undermining the darker elements. This balance is incredibly hard to pull off, but Allen absolutely nails it, making you cackle one minute and gasp the next. Itโs like a rollercoaster of emotions, which is exactly why it earned my five-star rating. The BookTok Lights Out phenomenon is completely understandable. This book is prime BookTok material because it's so discussable! The unique premise, the morally grey characters, the spice, and that unexpected humor โ itโs everything readers are looking for in a trending read. It sparks conversations about consent, trigger warnings (which are super important to heed for this one, especially the mentions of 'grape' and 'unaliving'), and how we reconcile dark themes with enjoyable fiction. For those wondering about the *Lights Out book genre*, it firmly sits in dark romance, but with a strong comedic undertone that sets it apart from many others in the subgenre. It's a great entry point if you're looking to dip your toes into the dark romance genre without it being relentlessly grim. And speaking of immersion, if you haven't tried the *audiobook*, you absolutely should. The narration brings Ally and Josh to life in such a compelling way that it enhances the experience tenfold. It truly is elite, just as the original review mentioned. I remember listening to it and being completely hooked during my commutes. Finally, let's appreciate the visual appeal that helps set the stage. The book cover, with its striking blue skull on a bed of green moss, perfectly encapsulates the dark, intriguing, yet strangely organic feel of the story. It immediately tells you this isn't a fluffy read, but something with a bit of an edge. Itโs a brilliant visual cue for whatโs inside. So, if you're looking for a dark romance that will genuinely surprise you with its humor, keep you on the edge of your seat with its unique plot, and introduce you to characters you won't soon forget, then 'Lights Out' by Navessa Allen is a must-read. Just remember to check those trigger warnings and prepare for a truly entertaining ride!

I absolutely loved this book. I listened to most of it on Audible. a friend had a physical copy and that's how I finished it. I can't wait for the next one to come out.
