Coloring Inspo Before & After

Creating beautiful, aesthetic drawings, especially with color, is one of my absolute favorite ways to unwind and express myself. You might have seen my red bow drawing transform from a simple pencil sketch on gray paper to a vibrant, finished piece, and I wanted to share some of my go-to tips for achieving that kind of 'before & after' magic! When it comes to colour drawing, it's not just about filling in lines; it's about making your artwork truly come alive. One of the first things I learned is the power of layering. Instead of pressing hard with your colored pencils right away, start with a light hand and gradually build up your color. This technique allows for smoother blends and gives your drawing more depth. For example, with my red bow, I didn't just use one shade of red; I probably started with a lighter red, then added a deeper red in the shadowed areas, and blended them together. Speaking of blending, it's a game-changer for an aesthetic drawing. Whether you use a blending stump, a colorless blender pencil, or even just a lighter shade pencil, smooth transitions between colors make a huge difference. You want the colors to flow seamlessly, not look like harsh blocks. This is especially important when you're trying to achieve a realistic or soft look in your artwork. Now, for those white highlights and sparkling details that truly elevate a drawing. A white gel pen, or even a very sharp white colored pencil, is your best friend here! After I've laid down all my main colors, I go in with a white pen to add those tiny, bright points of light that mimic shine – like on the satiny texture of the bow. For extra sparkle, I love to add rhinestones, but you could also use glitter glue or even just draw tiny white dots to simulate glitter. These small touches can completely change the perception of texture and light in your art. And let's not forget the black outlined touch! While some artists prefer a softer look without outlines, I find that a crisp black outline, especially with a colored pencil, helps define shapes and makes subjects pop off the gray paper. It provides a strong contrast that really highlights the vibrant red bow drawing. It's like putting a frame around your masterpiece within the drawing itself. Experimenting with different tools can also unlock new possibilities. Don't be afraid to mix media! Maybe try watercolor pencils for a softer base, then add colored pencil details on top.
