Good morning! As you know, letting my horses out is just one crucial part of our daily rhythm. But a truly healthy and happy horse needs a comprehensive routine that goes beyond just pasture time. It’s a full commitment, but incredibly rewarding when you see them thrive. After their initial 'Good morning' greetings and a quick check, their breakfast isn't just about turning them out. For my two, Mic & Heri, managing their diet is absolutely crucial. Since they gain weight easily, free-feeding isn't an option. They get carefully measured hay rations to prevent overeating, and sometimes a small amount of low-starch concentrate to ensure they get all their essential vitamins and minerals without adding unnecessary calories. It's not just 'YUM' for them; it’s a calculated effort to keep their hooves and bone structure healthy. This twice-daily feeding schedule, especially during spring, summer, and fall, is key to their long-term well-being. Once they’re out, or even before, a thorough groom is an essential part of our daily interaction. I always say 'Hey Buddy!' as I start brushing, making it a bonding moment. This is a great time to not only remove dirt and loose hair but also to perform a quick health check. I look for any new bumps, scrapes, or signs of lameness. Hoof picking is non-negotiable; you’d be surprised what can get stuck in there, and preventing issues like thrush is so important. It’s also a chance to feel their legs for any heat or swelling, which could indicate a problem. Keeping their environment clean is vital for preventing illness and maintaining comfort. I regularly check the water troughs – fresh, clean water is a must-have for all animals! And while they're out grazing, I keep an eye on the pasture for any potential hazards or areas that need attention. It’s all part of making sure they have a safe, clean, and stimulating place to live, whether they're just frolicking or having a quiet graze under the sun. The evening brings another round of care. It’s not just about bringing them back in; it’s another chance for a quick health check, maybe a little extra grooming, and just some quiet time together. Sometimes it’s a playful 'Send em through!' as they head to their night paddocks, followed by a calm 'Good stay Raven' for one of my more spirited ones. It’s about building trust and connection, making sure they feel secure and loved before they settle down for the night. This consistent 'daily horse routine' might seem like a lot of work, but every step is filled with love and dedication. Seeing them healthy and happy, knowing they’re thriving because of this consistent care, is incredibly rewarding. Every 'YUM' from them during feeding, every gentle nuzzle, makes all the effort absolutely worth it. It’s more than just chores; it’s a lifestyle deeply intertwined with the well-being of these magnificent animals.
