what are your academic hot takes? 📚⁉️

As a junior in college, here’s some of my hottest takes as a student!

1. Your internships and involvement in school don’t have to match your major or career goals perfectly! I’ve had internships in policy and education, and they have both shaped who I am as a student! It’s all part of building a story for when you apply to jobs in the future. I’ve learned valuable skills in those roles and they were jobs I really loved!

2. Going to community college isn’t a bad thing! I did my first 2 years at a community college through dual enrollment and it was really helpful. Going to a community college can really help with the transition from high school to college, there’s small class sizes, and you have the time to learn and grow while still being close to home!

3. You don’t have to know exactly what you want to do yet! I’m majoring in chemistry because I love it and I want to go into a STEM career. I don’t know exactly how that will look yet, but I’m exploring all of my options from teaching to industry and even some unconventional chemistry jobs such as patent law, sales, or switching it up and going into engineering!

4. You can be just as successful at a small lesser known school than a large school. I go to a smaller university and I feel like I’ve had more opportunities to be involved in research, hold leadership positions, and connect with professors than I would at a bigger school. As far as getting jobs, I have an internship with a well known entity alongside students from ivys and large colleges! Your school doesn’t define you, it’s about taking opportunities and having a meaningful personal statement!

What are your college hot takes? 🔥

... Read moreWhen it comes to building a successful academic and professional journey, flexibility and exploration play crucial roles. A common misconception among students is that internships and extracurricular activities must align perfectly with their declared major or future career goals. However, participation in diverse roles, such as policy or education internships as mentioned, enriches skill sets and broadens perspectives, ultimately enhancing a student’s narrative for job applications. Community colleges offer valuable opportunities for many students transitioning from high school. Their smaller class sizes and supportive environments provide a smoother adjustment period and personalized attention. Dual enrollment programs allow students to earn college credits early, saving both time and money while maintaining a balance between family life and education. Uncertainty about specific career paths is natural, especially in dynamic fields like STEM. Majoring in chemistry, for example, opens doors to various fields including teaching, industry, patent law, sales, and engineering. Exploring unconventional options not only helps students find fulfilling career paths but also makes them more adaptable in competitive job markets. Choosing to attend a smaller or lesser-known university instead of a large, prestigious school does not limit one’s success. Students at smaller schools often gain more access to research projects, leadership roles, and meaningful faculty relationships. Success hinges on leveraging available opportunities, crafting compelling personal statements, and showcasing unique experiences rather than strictly the institution’s prestige. Supporting this perspective, research shows that employers increasingly value practical skills, hands-on experience, and personal initiative over the brand name of the school attended. Internships with recognized organizations alongside students from Ivy League or large colleges demonstrate that merit and effort often outweigh institutional reputation. In summary, embracing varied internships, acknowledging the benefits of community college, maintaining an open mind about career options, and maximizing opportunities at any school size are essential strategies for academic success. These insights can help students build fulfilling educational experiences and build competitive profiles that stand out to future employers.
