college freshmen need this dorm hack!!

if this is your first time living on campus, I have the best hack for you!! I wish I did this when I moved into my freshman dorm!

⭐️pack lightly, buy new things when you get there!! This helps save money and space!

When I first moved into my college dorm, I was so excited! I got tons of new things before moving in. I got lots of new skincare, decorations, kitchen supplies, and new clothes. I had a lot of fun shopping, but I realized this was a big mistake🥲🥲 I should have waited until I moved into my dorm to see the space! I packed a lot more than I needed for sure. I ended up sending lots of it home because it didn’t fit in the dorm, my roommates had duplicates or it didn’t match things my roommates had, or I got things I really didn’t need.

The best strategy for dorm move in is to bring only a few things (clothes, toiletries you already have, and a few basic items) and buy everything else when you get there! I thought bringing everything would make moving in a lot faster, but I still had to go out to the store to get groceries and other last minute things. Also, most colleges are close to stores like target and Marshall’s (mine is even close to an ikea!!), so it’s super easy to run out and get things once you get there!

Also, for odd specific things you think you may need, wait until you need it to go get it to save space!! I also liked having the practice of only buying one thing at a time… for example I would only have one bottle of lotion / soap / shampoo at a time or one of each make up item instead of having tons. I would buy new ones as needed. It really helped to save space and money!

One key dorm life hack highly recommended is to pack lightly and plan to buy most of the necessary items locally after arrival. This strategy not only conserves precious dorm space but also prevents overspending on things you may not actually need. College dorm rooms are typically small, and overpacking often leads to clutter and frustration. By bringing only essential clothing, toiletries, and a few personal items, students can adapt their purchases based on the actual dorm layout and roommate needs. This approach encourages mindful buying, where students only purchase one item at a time, such as one bottle of shampoo or lotion, reducing duplicates and waste. Most universities are conveniently located near stores like Target, Marshall’s, and even Ikea, making it easy to shop for additional dorm supplies such as bedding, kitchenware, or decorations when needed. This accessibility helps freshmen avoid the hassle of transporting bulky or unnecessary items from home. Additionally, waiting to buy odd or specific items allows students to prioritize what is truly essential, saving space and money while customizing their living environment gradually. Engage with local shopping options or campus marketplaces to find great deals and student-friendly stores. Beyond packing and shopping tips, freshmen should also consider essentials such as organizational tools, multi-functional furniture, and storage solutions that maximize small dorm spaces. Items like under-bed storage bins, hanging organizers, and foldable furniture can significantly enhance dorm room functionality. Effective preparation and smart purchasing habits not only ease the moving-in process but also lay the foundation for a more comfortable, organized, and enjoyable college living experience. Embracing this dorm hack can reduce stress and help freshmen focus on academics and social growth during their first year on campus.
