Mini Deep Fryer: Chicken Nuggets!
💡 Kitchen find of the week: a mini Lumme electric deep fryer I scored at Marshall’s for just $25! It’s tiny, super cute, and honestly perfect for small-batch cooking when you don’t want to mess with a huge pot of oil.
First thing I tried? Homemade chicken nuggets 🍗
Here’s what I did:
✨ 1.5 lbs chicken breast, cut into cubes
✨ Soaked in buttermilk
✨ Coated in seasoned flour
✨ Fried in about 30 minutes total
The nuggets came out crispy and golden. I wasn’t in love with the flavor (had to dip mine in ranch 😂), but my son devoured them, so I call that a win. Plus, I made enough for 3 people AND leftovers for his lunch.
What I liked about this fryer:
✔️ Compact & easy to use
✔️ Only one oil fill needed
✔️ Super affordable
Things I wasn’t obsessed with:
❌ The middle part doesn’t come out for easy dumping (would’ve made cleanup easier)
❌ I had to fry with the lid open since condensation built up — didn’t want water dripping into the hot oil!
Overall verdict: Obsessed ✅ (especially for $25). I’ll be testing out more coatings + seasonings until I find the perfect nugget recipe. Stay tuned because this fryer is going to get a workout in my kitchen!

After all that delicious deep frying, the cleanup can be a bit daunting, especially with mini fryers like my Lumme where the inner pot isn't always fully removable. I've found a few tricks that make it much easier. First, always let the oil cool completely! Seriously, don't rush this step. Once it's cool, carefully pour the used oil into an old container (like a milk jug or a sturdy plastic bottle) for proper disposal. Never pour it down the drain. Next, use a paper towel or two to wipe out any remaining oil and crumbs from the main pot and the frying basket. This initial wipe-down is crucial. For the actual cleaning, I usually fill the fryer with hot, soapy water and let it sit for about 15-20 minutes. This helps loosen any stubborn, stuck-on bits. Then, I use a non-abrasive sponge or brush to gently scrub the inside. Since the heating element isn't removable on many models, you have to be careful not to submerge the electrical components. For the exterior, a damp cloth works wonders to wipe away any splatters, keeping your Lumme deep fryer sparkling and ready for its next use. Speaking of delicious results, getting those perfectly golden-brown, crispy chicken nuggets is an art! For my Lumme mini deep fryer, I've found that maintaining the ideal oil temperature is crucial, usually around 350-375°F (175-190°C). Don't overcrowd the metal frying basket – fry in small batches to maintain a consistent oil temperature and ensure even cooking. Overcrowding can drop the oil temperature, leading to soggy rather than crispy nuggets. This also helps prevent the chicken pieces from sticking together. I always recommend a double-coating method: once in seasoned flour, then a quick dip in buttermilk, and then back into the flour. This creates that fantastic crunchy exterior everyone craves, with that satisfying oil bubbling as they cook. Using the right oil makes a huge difference too. I typically go for vegetable oil, canola oil, or peanut oil because they have high smoke points, which means they can get hot enough for frying without breaking down or smoking excessively. For a mini deep fryer like mine, you don't need a ton of oil, which is great for saving on costs and reducing waste. I try to filter my oil after each use if it's clean enough, storing it in a sealed container in a cool, dark place. This extends its life, but always discard oil if it smells off, is very dark, or starts smoking at lower temperatures. Fresh oil means better-tasting, crispy results every time. While my son devours his homemade chicken nuggets plain or with ranch, I know many of you are looking for other delicious pairings. Classic ketchup, BBQ sauce, honey mustard, or sweet and sour sauce are always winners. For something a bit different, try a homemade garlic aioli or a spicy sriracha mayo. They also make a great addition to salads or as part of a fun appetizer platter. The versatility of crispy, homemade chicken nuggets is endless! One final tip for mini fryers: keeping the lid open while frying, as I mentioned in my initial review, is key to prevent condensation from dripping into the hot oil, which can be dangerous. Always ensure your food is as dry as possible before breading and frying to minimize splattering. My Lumme mini deep fryer has been a fantastic addition, proving that even a small appliance can deliver big flavor if you know a few tricks!
