I actually saw so many people trying to glimpse the sun without them, and it made me so anxious for their vision. Always look for the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard on any glasses you purchase; it’s your best defense against counterfeits.
Beyond glasses, there are other fantastic ways to experience a 95 percent solar eclipse safely. DIY pinhole projectors are super easy to make with just a couple of pieces of cardstock, and they offer a cool, indirect view of the sun's crescent shape on the ground. If you're into photography, like I am, the challenge of capturing the progression of the eclipse is immense but so rewarding. My makeshift solar filter did the trick for my camera, but for anyone serious about eclipse photography, investing in a certified solar filter designed specifically for your lens is crucial. You really don't want to risk your expensive camera equipment, let alone your eyesight, for a few photos. Think about it, a "composite image" showing the sun transforming into a "thin crescent" against a "dark background" is truly stunning, but it needs careful planning to achieve. When selecting a camera filter, look for reputable brands that specify their filters are for solar viewing, reducing the sun's intensity by 99.999% or more.
When preparing for an event like this, I found that planning ahead for viewing safety made all the difference. It’s not just about what you wear on your eyes, but also how you approach the whole viewing experience. For those moments when the eclipse reached its peak, showing that dramatic 94.3% totality, having my gear ready meant I could truly be present and marvel at the spectacle. It was amazing to see the sky dim, feel the temperature drop, and watch the world around me react to the 'orange sun' being gradually obscured. I even noticed shadows behaving differently, creating tiny crescent shapes on the ground through tree leaves!
Remember, a partial solar eclipse, even at 95% totality, is not safe to view directly without proper eye protection at any point. Only during a brief total solar eclipse (when the moon completely covers the sun) is it safe to briefly remove filters, and only if you are within the very narrow path of totality. Since I was just outside that path, my glasses stayed on the entire time. I learned so much about the science and safety of solar events.
