Iowa
Aside from the normal 9-5, working on my photography all around Iowa
It's true, while my weekdays are spent in a 9-5, my real passion comes alive when I'm out with my camera, exploring every corner of Iowa. People often think of Iowa as just flat farmland, but trust me, through my lens, I've discovered so much more! It's a state brimming with hidden beauty, from rolling hills and lush forests to historic small towns and vibrant cityscapes. One of the things I love most about photographing in Iowa is the incredible diversity of landscapes. You can find serene river valleys, dramatic bluffs along the Mississippi, and endless fields that transform with every season, offering a new palette of colors. Spring brings vibrant greens and blossoming wildflowers, summer paints the sky with incredible sunsets over cornfields, autumn explodes with fiery reds and golds, and winter cloaks everything in a peaceful, stark beauty. Each season presents unique challenges and opportunities for a photographer. I've spent countless weekends driving down backroads, finding unexpected gems. Some of my favorite spots include the Loess Hills in western Iowa, with their unique geological formations that look almost otherworldly, especially at sunrise or sunset. The bridges of Madison County offer a nostalgic, romantic backdrop, perfect for black and white photography. And then there are the state parks, like Backbone State Park or Maquoketa Caves, which provide incredible natural wonders and challenging compositions. Even the simplest barn or a lone tree in a field can become a captivating subject when you catch it in the right light. For anyone looking to dive into photography in Iowa, I have a few tips. Firstly, always chase the light! Golden hour, right after sunrise and before sunset, is magical here. The way the light hits the fields and architecture can transform a scene. Secondly, don't be afraid to explore off the beaten path. Some of the most stunning shots I've captured were in places I stumbled upon unexpectedly. Look for textures, patterns, and leading lines in the landscape. Thirdly, connect with the local community. There are so many passionate photographers in Iowa who are happy to share their favorite spots and techniques. It's more than just taking pictures; it's about seeing Iowa with fresh eyes and sharing its quiet grandeur with the world. Every click of the shutter is a moment I'm preserving, a story I'm telling about this beautiful state. My goal is always to reveal the Iowa that often goes unnoticed, the Iowa that truly shines through the lens of someone who loves it.
