Meet My Mo/Di Twins!

Welcoming my Mo/Di identical twin girls, Ava & Zoe, has been an incredible journey, and I’m so excited to share more of what it’s like. When we found out we were having Mo/Di twins, it was a lot to learn! For those wondering, Mo/Di stands for monochorionic-diamniotic, meaning they shared one placenta but had their own amniotic sacs. This type of twin pregnancy comes with its own unique monitoring and considerations, such as the risk of Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS), highlighting the incredible, deep bond they already share even before birth. Understanding these terms helped me feel more prepared, even though nothing truly prepares you for the reality of twins. Our path began earlier than expected, bringing us to the NICU. It's a world you never anticipate entering, filled with the constant hum of machines, dedicated nurses, and tiny miracles. Every day is a mix of emotions – immense gratitude for their tireless care, anxiety over every little change in their stats, and the aching emptiness of leaving your babies behind at night. I vividly remember watching Ava and Zoe sleeping peacefully side-by-side in their bassinets, each with their tiny nasal cannulas, and my heart would just melt. Seeing them so close, even with medical wires, was a powerful reminder of their incredible connection. It’s moments like these, seeing them curled up together, one in her soft white sleeper and the other in her cute pink leopard print 'LITTLE SIS' outfit, that make the tough days in the NICU worth every struggle. One of the hardest parts in the NICU is the feeling of being on a rollercoaster – one day they’re hitting exciting milestones like tolerating full feeds, and the next there's a slight regression in their breathing or weight. It teaches you patience, resilience, and an unwavering belief in your babies' strength like nothing else. We've learned so much about caring for two tiny identical twin babies, from coordinating feeds and diaper changes to understanding their individual needs even as they share such a profound bond. Many people ask about identical twins, and yes, they are almost always the same sex, originating from a single fertilized egg that splits. Ava and Zoe are proof of that special, same-sex bond from day one, an undeniable connection that's truly magical to witness. (It's a common misconception that identical twins can be boy and girl, but genetically, it's extremely rare!) Despite the challenges, seeing their progress daily is the greatest reward. Each gram gained, every successful feed, and especially, getting to hold them skin-to-skin – these are the moments that truly matter and fuel us through the toughest days. I've found so much comfort in connecting with other parents of Mo/Di twins or those who've had NICU journeys; sharing experiences and tips helps immensely. This journey is far from over, but I'm embracing every moment with my identical twin girls. It's a unique adventure, filled with love and hope, and I can't wait for what's next for Ava and Zoe.
