The Fragrance of Devotion
Holy Wednesday Bible Study:
It is midweek now.
The air feels heavier.
Jerusalem is full, but beneath the noise, something sacred and sorrowful is unfolding. Jesus knows what is coming. And in the middle of this tension, we are invited into two very different hearts.
One full of love.
One drifting toward betrayal.
While many still followed Jesus, not everyone loved Him.
Some were already planning His death.
Matthew 26:3–4 (KJV)
"Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas,
And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him."
Quiet whispers. Secret meetings.
Evil does not always shout it often moves in silence.
And while this plan unfolds, another moment is taking place.
Jesus is sitting at supper.
The room is filled with conversation, the clinking of dishes, the ordinary sounds of life.
And then…
She walks in.
She carries something costly. Precious. Breakable.
Matthew 26:7 (KJV)
"There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat."
She doesn’t speak.
She doesn’t hesitate.
She simply pours.
Not everyone understands her.
In fact, they criticize her.
Matthew 26:8–9 (KJV)
"But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste?
For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor."
To them, it looked like waste.
But Jesus saw worship.
He defends her.
He honors her.
Matthew 26:10 (KJV)
"When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me."
And then He reveals something deeper.
Matthew 26:12–13 (KJV)
"For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial.
Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her."
She understood something others didn’t.
While others argued…
She worshipped.
While others planned…
She gave.
And right after this beautiful moment
We see the opposite.
Matthew 26:14–15 (KJV)
"Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests,
And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver."
One woman gives everything out of love.
One disciple gives Jesus away for silver.
Two hearts.
Two choices.
Sit with this for a moment.
You are in that room.
What do you carry?
Are your hands open or holding back?
Are you pouring out or pulling away?
God is not looking for perfection.
He is looking for devotion.
What is something “costly” God is asking you to surrender?
Have you ever held back because others might not understand?
Are there areas where your heart is drifting instead of drawing near?
Remember what looks like “too much” to others is often true worship to God.
Closing Prayer
Lord,
Give me a heart like the woman with the alabaster box.
A heart that does not measure cost,
But pours out love freely at Your feet.
Keep me from a drifting heart like Judas One that slowly trades intimacy for lesser things.
Let my life be a fragrance of worship to You,
Even when others do not understand.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
