Vacation Nail disaster- before & after 🌺🐬🌈
Okay, so here's a little story time. I don't usually get my nails done, not because of the gym or anything like that, but mostly because I always get overcharged, and the nails never turn out the way I want.
Over the past five years, I've visited many top-rated nail salons. Initially, I would get my nails done for vacations, birthdays, and holidays. However, when I started dating my boyfriend, I began getting my nails done every two weeks for his football games, always in a theme with our university or featuring his number or initials. You know, something cute. But every time, the nails were either too thick, crooked, weirdly shaped, or the design was just "meh." My biggest issue was that no salon could or even tried to match my natural nail color for the French tip base that I always prefer.
A few weeks ago, I was invited by my friends to get our nails done for a graduation. I decided to go for a really cute summer set: yellow French tips with a pink hibiscus, the Hawaiian flower. I wanted summer nails to brighten up my look and for my upcoming vacation to Hawai’i in two weeks.
The salon I went to was lovely. The owner was great and very hospitable. She offered us free champagne, gave me imported chocolates, and kept trying to bring me water. Overall, the customer service was 10/10. However, I had to wait about two hours before they started on my nails because they only had one acrylic nail tech. Normally, I would have just come back another day or gone to a different salon, but when we walked in, we were assured they had space for all of us to get acrylic nails done together.
I showed the nail tech my inspiration (see slide 2), and she assured me she could replicate it 100%. I was hoping for at least 75-80% accuracy. I didn't mind if the color wasn't a perfect match or if the nail shape wasn't perfect, but I really wanted the flower to be correct.
After about an hour, my nails were done, and we left the salon feeling good. However, when I got home and took a closer look, I wanted to cry (see slide 3). The nails were pretty, but they didn't match the inspiration. The flowers didn't look like hibiscus at all, and the effort to stick to my desired color scheme was lacking. Plus, I was charged $100, not including the tip. I also asked for acrylic nails but was given gel extensions. When I questioned this, they assured me that gel extensions were just another form of acrylic and that I could get them filled.
Seeing how upset I was, my boyfriend offered to take me to get my nails redone somewhere else before our flight out of Seattle.
Since I was moving to Vancouver, I left for the States to check out my new house and university a few days before our flight to Maui. I looked up nail salons near me and found one with 1000 reviews and nearly five stars. Despite my previous experiences with top-rated salons, I wasn't sure what to expect.
I visited Perfection Nails, a salon in a strip mall in Vancouver. Inside, it was like any other salon, with hair services on one side and nails on the other. I got a pedicure, which was good and speedy.
I noticed how quickly they serviced their clients, and everyone seemed to know their nail techs by name, scheduling appointments weeks in advance. This gave me higher hopes.
I sat with a nail tech named Kim, who was very friendly. She asked about university, my boyfriend, family, vacations—the usual. She did an amazing job removing my previous nails, not using the usual tinfoil method that leaves nails dry and cracked. Instead, she soaked each hand individually for 30-60 seconds while shaving down the other, leaving my nails looking healthy.
Kim was incredible, checking with me throughout the process about nail length, shape, base color (which she matched perfectly to my natural nails), and the colors for my French tips. She even confirmed the price, which was $80—so reasonable for the quality and service provided. She built up a full new set with two colors and added flowers on all the nails.
