Repeat number 22 and I've memorized the soundtrack

Repeat number 22 and I have officially memorized the background music. 😂

If you're an autism parent you already know — when they find the thing, THE THING becomes the entire household's personality for the next several weeks. Or months. We don't judge the timeline around here.

Spider-Man has been our main character for a while now and honestly? I've stopped fighting it. There's something beautiful about watching him light up every single time like it's the first time he's ever seen it.

That joy? That pure, unfiltered, full body excitement? That's the thing nobody tells you about raising an autistic child. The way they love something is unlike anything you've ever witnessed. It's not just watching a show. It's a full experience. Every. Single. Time.

So yes we are on repeat number 22. Yes I know every word. Yes I will sit here and watch it with him because these are the moments I'll miss one day.

If you know, you know. 🧩💛

... Read moreAs a parent of an autistic child, I’ve come to truly appreciate the special magic that happens when something becomes 'THE THING'—that one song, show, or activity that captures their entire world. For us, it's the background music from Spider-Man, played on repeat for over twenty times. At first, it might feel exhausting to hear the same soundtrack again and again, but there’s an unmistakable beauty in witnessing your child’s unfiltered excitement and deep engagement every single time. This repetitive behavior is more than just preference; it provides comfort, stability, and a sensory experience that can be profoundly soothing and joyful. Autism often involves heightened sensory processing, so something as simple as a familiar tune can become a powerful anchor in their routine. Watching my child light up with each note reminds me how precious these moments are. It’s not just passive listening—it’s a full emotional and sensory immersion. Their joy is contagious and teaches me patience and presence. While society often focuses on milestones and progress, I’ve learned that embracing these repetitive moments allows us to connect deeply and celebrate the unique ways our children express happiness. If you’re an autism parent, you likely understand the mixed feelings of loving these repetitive phases yet sometimes craving variety. But through sharing experiences with other families, I’ve found reassurance that the timeline doesn’t matter—what matters is the connection and the joy these 'repeats' bring. For families navigating neurodiverse life, it’s a beautiful reminder to slow down, be present, and cherish these full-bodied moments of sensory joy.
