Day in the Life of an Unemployed Nurse with ADHD

👩🏽‍⚕️I have been a registered nurse for 15 years , and I have been an Independent Nurse Contractor for at least 4 of those years. I have spent a total of 24 years working in healthcare. My favorite specialty was Interventional Radiology.

🏃🏽‍♀️‍➡️🏃🏽‍♀️However, some of my ADHD symptoms of procrastination, indecisiveness, extreme boredom, starting and never finishing projects were a bit of a hindrance. To keep myself on track and productive, I made a daily schedule for me to be successful for myself during this unemployment period.

📖I read my favorite Bible verses and pray twice daily and light incense every morning with another prayer. Then I start my day.

😴And yes, the nap is scheduled, I take ADHD medication and noticed I crash around the same time daily, and the medication also suppresses my appetite so eating one good meal is not anything new for me😭, however I'm still fluffy😒

🤦🏽‍♀️I'm not very consistent with posting on social media because I thrive off participation, which is a motivational factor for me, something I don't receive much of, however, I still post.

💫🧿Since 2019, I have been receiving my spiritual certifications to practice and I started on the road for my PhD. in Divinity in August '24, and recently became an ordained minister.

📽👹😱After all this is done. I watch a corny horror movie.

💪🏼I felt like it was way overdue for me to take my time back and also be accountable for steering a course for myself instead of allowing others to direct and make a plan that didn't resonate to me. I was working hard, however, nothing to show for it, and this cycle just kept going until I left. And it's the best decision I have ever made.

Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

What are you planning to do differently in 2025?

For those with ADHD, daily structure and accountability are critical for productivity and emotional well-being. A well-planned daily schedule that incorporates tasks such as reading inspirational texts, engaging in prayer, and allowing time for physical activity can significantly impact one's mental state. Understanding ADHD is crucial as it involves unique challenges such as difficulty with procrastination and managing boredom. For many, following a consistent routine entails scheduled nap times, which can help manage energy levels throughout the day. Establishing rituals—like lighting incense and meditation—might also foster a calming environment to increase focus and creativity. Moreover, pursuing personal growth through education or spiritual certifications can be a fulfilling way to spend time during unemployment. Creating a balance between relaxation and productive activities is essential to mitigate feelings of self-doubt and inadequacy. For many, watching favorite movies or engaging in social media can offer a much-needed break from more structured tasks. Ultimately, accountability to oneself is vital. The journey of self-discovery during an unemployed phase allows individuals to reassess their priorities and take charge of their future. By designing a life that aligns with personal values, those navigating similar paths can find motivation and direction, paving the way for new opportunities in a post-pandemic world.
