What I saw vs What I did !
I’m trying to learn to style my hair with braids because I just don’t want to pay for it 😅
It didn’t come out exactly as I’d like but I still think it looks really good. I’ll definitely keep trying to execute.

Learning to do your own braids at home can feel a bit daunting, especially when you see all those perfect looks on Pinterest! But trust me, it's totally worth it. Like many of you, my main motivation was saving money, but it's also incredibly rewarding to learn a new skill and truly customize your look. When I started, I spent hours looking at Pinterest curly hairstyles black girl and pinterest hairstyles for black hair braids. There are so many gorgeous braided hairstyle ideas out there! What I've learned is to pick an inspiration photo, like one with intricate cornrows leading into a voluminous, curly black bun, and really break it down. Don't try to replicate exactly at first. Instead, focus on understanding the core elements. Is it the sectioning? The type of braid? The way the curly ends are styled? Before you even start braiding, proper hair prep is crucial. Make sure your hair is clean, detangled, and moisturized. Using a good leave-in conditioner and a light oil can make a huge difference in managing your strands, especially if you have light brown braided hair like mine or darker, thicker textures. Sectioning is another big one. Neat, precise sections are the foundation of a clean braid. Invest in a good rat-tail comb and some clips. One of the biggest challenges I faced was getting the back view right! It's so hard to see what you're doing back there. My best tip? Use a handheld mirror in conjunction with a larger wall mirror. Hold the smaller mirror behind your head and look into the wall mirror to see the reflection. It takes practice, but it's a game-changer. Some people even set up their phones to record while they braid, then watch it back to see where they can improve. Don't be discouraged if your first attempts don't look exactly like the curly bun you saw on Pinterest. Mine certainly didn't! The key is consistency and patience. Each time you try, you'll get a little bit better. You'll learn what works for your hair type, how much tension to apply, and how to create those smooth, neat parts. Remember, even professional stylists started somewhere. DIY braids are a journey, not a destination. Celebrate every little victory, whether it's perfectly symmetrical parts or a beautifully defined curly bun. It's all about enjoying the process and being proud of the hands-on effort you're putting into your hair. And who knows, maybe next time we can even try adding some fun hoop earrings to complete the look!
