Songkran In BKK? I’ve gotchu !!☺️
Hello everyone! It’s been awhile, and My 2026 hasn’t been the greatest….🙂↕️ so honestly I felt like my 2026 only truly started after I came back from my skngkran trip to bkk😂 but the tea is for another day 😂😌 ANYWAYS
Here is everything you’d need to know for Songkran!
1. Mental Preparation to GET WET
- I would recommend for everyone to reach Thailand, at least a few days before the divorce starts because once the festival starts, everyone will be spraying water at you regardless whether you are participating or not. I’m saying this because my friend arrived on the second day of the festival, and she got sprayed at even though she was wearing her airport outfit and dragging her luggage along the street. There are a lot of foreigners in the country during this period and sometimes they just don’t care if you’re playing or not 🙂↕️ despite all the rules about the festival, its not upheld strictly unless you really make a big hoo ha about it or unless if its more on the serious side, like SA or OOM
2. Outfit preparations
- By saying be prepared, I really mean be ready to be FULLY WET down to the core. Its a full on water fight on the streets and everyone is spraying water at each other so you will DEFINITELY be a 100% wet
I’d recommend my girlies to wear swimsuit tops, and then the bottoms should be some Drifit or waterproof material. You can wear denim shorts, but note that you’ll probably only be able to wear it once, and that you’ll have to hang it up somewhere in your accommodation to dry . For my modest girlies, You can wear long sleeve rash guards , and a shirt over the rashguard, and some sports leggings!
For the guys, you can actually just wear a shirt and shorts, or some kind of muscle tank! Or go topless…..but make sure you have a tshirt to wear when you’re going somewhere else 😅
It’s pretty hot in April, without sg’s humidity, so I’d recommend you to bring your sunglasses as well! 🕶️🌞
Also, Don’t forget to prep your waterproof bags (avoid black because it heats up like fire under the sun)
and waterproof phone pouches!
3. Footwear
- I wore CROCS , and brought only Crocs!
no slides, because you’d risk getting your slides stuck at your ankles and least to say shoes…..😅😂 Slippers are fine as well!
4. Waterguns
- For this, I would actually recommend you guys to buy from the street vendors as most of the time the prices are not that much of a difference from the ones in the shopping malls, and in fact, it might be even cheaper. I first bought a water gun from a stall at Siam Square one for 250 THB, but it ended up being broken and I couldn’t even use it at all.😭 I guess the right thing to do would actually be to test the water gun out, but at that moment it was a bit hard because the toilet was quite far away and the store girlies didn’t have any water for me to put into the water gun so I didn’t manage to test it out first, and least to say we were in a mall so I couldn’t test it properly. I ended up buying another water gun for 350 THB and this time round, it worked well thankfully! But I guess long story short is to always check the price - you can say
อันนี้เท่าไหร่นะคะ (Ah ni tao rai na ka? ) which means how much is this? And test the watergun, before you make the purchase💵
5. Festivals and Events
- If you like thai celebs, they usually have appreciative for certain events in celebration of Songkran! Some of the thai malls also do FREE Festivals which is AMAZING but you’d hv to keep a lookout on the individual celeb’s agency socials for their artist schedules, which they update every 2 weeks! I sadly missed a free concert with performances by Jeff Satur and Perses, because i flew back on the morning of the concert 😭 but i trust that they’d do one again in 2027!!
6. Check In Baggage
- Yes, I know it will probably be more expensive for you to book a flight with check in baggage, but this is to ensure that you are able to bring home your water gun and also do a-lot more shopping, and not to mention, not having to worry if your liquids are under 100 ML or not 🙂↕️
7. Transport
I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend you to take the train from the airport to the nearest BTS Station to your accommodation, as the Bangkok, traffic is really really very bad least to say it is a festive season for the country, so the traffic would be equally bad if not worse. You can use your pay wave function to pay for the airport railway!!
You need to buy the rabbit card at your nearest BTS station, as this card can be used to travel on all BTS, except for the Airport Line and the MRT. They now also have an app. Which you can connect your rabbit card too, but the only troublesome thing is that you need to go to the station centre get the stuff to help you connect your card to your app because you’re a foreigner.
Other than that, honestly, you can use bolt or grab and try the bike option as it’s often way cheaper than the car ride and you can get to your location pretty quickly! I regret not trying this earlier because I was scared, but after trying it I would definitely do it over and over again 😂
All in all, this was a really fun experience, and i really enjoyed myself!!! I’d definitely be back in 2027, so see you then!! 🥳🎉🎊
If you’re wondering what to wear during the Songkran festival in Bangkok, my experience might help you prepare better. Wearing swimwear tops and waterproof or quick-dry bottoms is ideal since you’ll get soaked nonstop. I found that leggings and rash guards help if you prefer more coverage but still want something lightweight. Choosing appropriate footwear is crucial—Crocs or slippers worked best for me, as they don’t get stuck and dry fairly quickly. Avoid slides or regular shoes; they can be uncomfortable and problematic when wet. Don’t forget waterproof bags and phone pouches to protect your valuables from water damage. I learned this the hard way! Another useful tip is to pick up your water guns from street vendors rather than malls. They’re often cheaper and reliable, but always test your water gun before buying. If possible, learn a few local phrases like อันนี้เท่าไหร่นะคะ (How much is this?) to navigate stalls better. Lastly, prepare mentally to be splashed relentlessly even if you’re just walking around. The water fights are part of the fun and excitement, but a heads-up can save any surprises. Overall, dressing with the right gear made my Songkran experience in Bangkok unforgettable. Hope these tips help you stay comfortable and fully enjoy this vibrant festival!
