This condition occurs when the hair is pulled too tightly for prolonged periods, causing hair loss mainly along the hairline or sections under constant tension. Many people think braids are a protective style, but if not done carefully or if left in too long, they can cause more harm than good. It's important to communicate with your stylist about not pulling the hair too tightly and to give your scalp regular breaks between braiding sessions. Additionally, using moisturizing products and avoiding heavy extensions that weigh down the hair can reduce stress on hair follicles. Regular scalp massages with oils can help improve circulation and promote hair growth. Personally, after noticing thinning edges from frequent braiding, I switched to looser styles with smaller tension and started incorporating scalp care routines. Over time, this helped in regaining healthier hair growth. Awareness and gentle care are key to preventing alopecia related to braiding.
