... Read moreWhen planning your trip from Kunming to Shangrila, consider booking domestic flights early to secure good prices and reliable times. While in Shangrila, taking a mandatory photoshoot at spots like the vast grasslands, prayer flags, and Songzanlin Monastery offers memorable souvenirs, especially as photographers provide many edited pictures for a reasonable fee.
In Lijiang, although the famous Tiger Leaping Gorge might be pricey via private car, exploring the ancient town itself and enjoying local delicacies like wild mushroom hotpot can be very rewarding. For those sensitive to certain smells, be aware that some massage places might have cigarette odors—so it’s worth trying different spas to find a clean and relaxing environment.
Kunming's old streets and iconic spots such as Huanggongdong Street are perfect for low-key exploration. Though some seasonal parks like the Blue Jacaranda bloom mainly in August, shopping malls with refreshing massage options can be a nice break from sightseeing.
Hotel stays averaging S$50-$75 per night make Yunnan a budget-friendly trip, but be prepared for some variation in room quality, especially in Kunming's older hotels. Balancing your itinerary between trains and flights offers flexibility but plan your travel times carefully to maximize sightseeing.
Lastly, while certain local foods might be unfamiliar or challenging, trying new flavors often adds to the adventure. Skipping popular but time-consuming sites can be necessary but leaves exciting reasons for a future return visit to this culturally rich and scenic region.
