One degree hotter… in pilates 🤯
Ahh yes. Uni graduation — you see it on your Instagram stories, your TikTok FYP, and even your LinkedIn home page. Your friends and people around you start asking “Have you secured a job?” “What are you planning to do after?” “What companies have you applied for?”, and the list of questions goes on. 😭
You see your LinkedIn connections start posting more frequently, sharing about their university achievements and corporate roles they’re going into.
If you’re like me, you may have taken the conventional education pathway in Singapore, where we start off with primary school, then secondary followed by junior college and then uni. Yet in the blink of an eye, you have graduated without an answer for what’s next in life.
This was SO daunting for me and even more so when i decided to train to be a pilates instructor instead! I felt so left out 😖 especially when i see the people around me start their corporate jobs
✨However, here are a few reasons I found myself signing a contract to teach Pilates for one year
1. Wanted income ASAP 💵
i’ve mostly been self-sufficient since university, taking on part-time roles to fund my own expenses and education. but because I decided to take a step back from work and fully focus on completing my last semester, i did not draw any income since January.
2. Flexible schedule 🌸
I believe it varies from studio to studio, but as of now I currently work 6 days a week teaching 3 classes a day. This leaves me time to hone my skillset in other areas as well as spend time on my hobbies. 💞
3. Decent pay 🤑
can’t disclose the amount, but i would say it’s definitely competitive among the fresh graduate salary (for per hour rate) and tbh most ppl won’t believe me when i tell them about it! 😬 tho ofc if you’re comparing to IB or coding then nope 🫠
4. Couldn’t get the corporate jobs i wanted 😵💫
I initially wanted to go into tech sales/ maybe even finance (i interviewed for a crypto company lol) but obviously didn’t get any of it HAHAHA i think i realised it a little too late in my uni journey and everyone was alr way ahead of me in terms of internship/ work experience in those fields. I did get a couple of interview requests but only AFTER i signed my pilates contract 💀 so i took it as a sign that it wasn’t meant for me 😴
As of now, I’m fully happy where i am for the next one year and we shall see what happens next … 🤭
Feel free to ask if you’d like to know more about teaching pilates! And comment down below if you’re a fresh graduate who faced a similar situation 😜
Will be sharing more about the life of a pilates instructor soon ❤️
Many fresh graduates feel the pressure to immediately secure corporate jobs, especially in competitive fields like tech sales or finance. However, exploring alternative career paths, such as becoming a Pilates instructor, can offer unique benefits not found in traditional roles. For example, Pilates teaching provides flexibility that helps balance work and personal growth, a feature I deeply appreciated as I developed my skills beyond what a standard 9-to-5 could offer. Additionally, while some may compare Pilates income unfavorably to top-tier corporate salaries, the per hour rate for fresh graduates can be surprisingly competitive. This makes it a viable option for those needing income sooner without sacrificing lifestyle balance. Another benefit I experienced was the immediate ability to begin earning, without the long wait associated with internships or extensive recruitment processes. For those unfamiliar, NUS Pilates programs and Degree Pilates certifications are well-regarded qualifications that can help build credibility and membership benefits within groups like Gurliess, which offer networking and professional growth opportunities for instructors. Joining such communities can greatly enhance your career potential and provide ongoing support. If you're a fresh grad facing uncertainties about corporate job prospects, consider how a Pilates career might align with your goals. It not only provides steady income and flexibility but also supports a healthy lifestyle and personal fulfillment.
