Industrial Clustering
This concept is called Industrial Clustering (Industrial Cluster) - it is one of the main reasons why China has become the "factory of the world."
Briefly explained.
A city produces a single commodity, because the integration of all elements in the supply chain is at the same place, e.g.
• Supplier of raw materials
• Parts factory
• Specialized machinery
• Skilled workers on the line
• Logistics designed for that cargo
When everything is close together → lower cost + faster production + constant quality + immediate scale
Real example
• Yiwu = Small goods / miscellaneous items
• Shenzhen = Electronics
• Dongguan = Hardware / Parts Accessories
• Jinjiang = Shoes
These cities are like "commodity-specific ecosystems."
Why choose the wrong city and lose 20-40%?
If selected wrong, the cluster will be born:
• Must carry raw materials far
• Difficult to find specialized workers
• Machinery must be imported
• Inflexible supply chain
Latent costs will jump immediately even cheap wages.
Strategic Insight
China did not win because of cheap wages alone.
But it won because of the "city = world-class factory" manufacturing structure.
Other countries are difficult to copy because it requires:
• Time
• Infrastructure
• State policy
• Multi-layer business network
