Lake Vermilion Lights 4/15/25

Last night was perfect for chasing the Northern Lights. I have been scouting out new spots to capture them here. This one did not disappoint. When I arrived and started setting up the tripod, a little fox came to investigate what I was doing. It ventured out onto the ice and scampered around. Not long after, the geese started their warning calls. The light faded into a soft glow over Lake Vermilion as the lights began to come into view. It was a short-lived show but wow! I love it when you can see the waves with the naked eye.

The phenomenon, caused by solar winds interacting with the Earth's magnetosphere, can be best seen in dark, clear skies. While specific times for auroral activity vary, spring months are often great for sightings due to longer nights. To improve your chances of capturing these lights, consider checking aurora forecasts, and plan your outing on nights with minimal light pollution. Equip yourself with a sturdy tripod and a camera capable of long exposure settings. Familiarize yourself with the landscape ahead of time, so you can frame your shots creatively. Wildlife encounters, like the curious fox I met during my adventure, can add an extra layer of magic to your photography. Remember, patience is key; sometimes, the best displays happen when you least expect them. Whether you're skilled in photography or simply a lover of natural wonders, Lake Vermilion’s auroras are a spectacle you won't want to miss!
